A high-quality image is printed with reduced bleeding in colors that may appear at a boundary between a black image and a color image. A head for ejecting black ink and a head for ejecting color ink perform three times of scanning while feeding is carried out therebetween for moving the printing medium by four pitches of ejection openings arranged on the heads, different ejection openings are caused to correspond to a scanning area, which corresponds to the four pitches, and multi-pass printing is performed to complete printing on the area. The black head completes printing of the black image, and then, the color head completes printing of the color image adjacent to the black image. The arrangement of ejection openings is determined so that between last scanning for completing printing of the black image and the first scanning for printing of the color image, scanning with no performing printing exists.

Ink jet printing apparatus and ink jet printing method

The present invention relates to aqueous ink jet ink compositions comprising a water-soluble or ink-compatible anti-intercolor bleed agent. The ink jet ink compositions typically comprise water, a colorant of dye or pigment, or a mixture of dye and pigment, and a water-soluble or ink-compatible anti-intercolor bleed agent. In one embodiment the water-soluble or ink-compatible intercolor bleed agents of the invention comprise glycine materials with or without a fluorine atom and are represented by formula (I) in either ionic or nonionic forms, particularly those of fluorinated glycine salts with high fluorine content. The water-soluble or ink-compatible anti-intercolor bleed agent in an ink jet composition is believed to accelerate ink drying and to form hydrophobic layers on a print substrate near the image boundary in an ink jet printing process, thus minimizing undesired mixing of different neighboring inks resulting in a reduction of intercolor bleed. The ink jet ink compositions of the present invention exhibit reduced drying time, intercolor bleeding, and image defect as well as providing uniform ink image on transparencies. The ink jet ink compositions comprising the water-soluble or ink-compatible anti-intercolor bleed agents can be used in a multi-color ink jet printing process to obtain multi-color ink jet images at a high speed.

Ink jet ink compositions and printing processes

Ink jet printing is provided on large area substrates such as wide width textile webs. The printheads are driven by linear servo motors (633) across a bridge (630) that extends across the substrate. The timing of the jetting of the ink is coordinated with the motion of the printheads (640, 641), so that the heads can be rapidly moved and the ink can be jetted while the printheads are accelerating or decelerating as they move on the bridge. Preferably, ultraviolet (UV) light curable ink is jetted and first partially cured with UV light (645, 646) and then subjected to heating to more completely reduce uncured monomers of the ink on the substrate. Preferably, the heat is applied by contacting the substrate with a heated plate (661, 662). Ink jet printing is provided using ultraviolet (UV) light curable or other curable composition or stable or other printable substance. In certain embodiments the UV ink has a dye-component therein. The ink is jetted onto a substrate, the composition is cured, then heated to set the dye. Sublimation dye-based UV ink printing onto polyester is preferred. A release layer of protective material (702, 704) such as a TEFLON film or sheet, covers a substrate support (705, 706). A porous substrate to be printed, such as a textile material (711), is supported on or above the support. Ink is jetted onto the substrate, with some of the ink passing through pores in the substrate and landing on the protective material. UV curable ink is preferably used and is exposed by UV light from a UV light curing head, which solidifies the ink on the substrate. The UV curing light has a long enough focal length to focus on the surface of the substrate and also, where it passes through pores in the substrate, on ink on the protective material, thereby solidifying the ink on the protective material. When the substrate is removed from the support, the solidified ink on the protective material may be wiped from the protective material. The protective material may be a coating on the support over which the substrate slides or a belt that moves with the substrate. A textile substrate may be preconditioned by singeing or shaving to remove fuzz from the fabric that could clog the printheads. A printhead cleaning station is also provided.

Method and apparatus for ink jet printing

A recording sheet for ink jet printing is described, which consists of a support having coated thereon at least one ink-receiving layer consisting of binders, a nanocrystalline, nanoporous aluminum oxide or aluminum oxide/hydroxide, wherein the nanocrystalline, nanoporous aluminum oxide or aluminum oxide/hydroxide has been prepared in the absence of acids and has been treated with aluminum chlorohydrate. In a preferred embodiment of the invention the solution of aluminum chlorohydrate is aged at elevated temperature.

A process and apparatus for forming an image on a moving substrate (1) involves ink jet printing a radiation-curable ink onto the substrate with a print head (4). The image is cured by exposure to a radiation source (19). The time between printing and curing is substantially the same for all portions of the substrate (1).

A specific embodiment of the invention is directed to a thermal ink jet printing process which comprises (1) incorporating into a thermal ink jet printing apparatus an ink composition which comprises an aqueous liquid vehicle, a colorant, and an ionic compound at least partially ionizable in the liquid vehicle, said ink composition having a conductivity of at least about 10 milliSiemens per centimeter; (2) heating the ink in an imagewise pattern to cause bubbles to form therein, thereby causing droplets of the ink to be ejected in an imagewise pattern onto a substrate, thereby generating images on the substrate; and (3) exposing the substrate to microwave radiation, thereby drying the images on the substrate.

Disclosed is a printing process which comprises applying in imagewise fashion to a substrate an ink composition which comprises an aqueous liquid vehicle, a colorant, and a drying component selected from the group consisting of zwitterionic compounds, and subsequently exposing the substrate to microwave radiation, thereby drying the images on the substrate. In a preferred embodiment, the invention is directed to a thermal ink jet printing process which comprises (1) incorporating into a thermal ink jet printing apparatus an ink composition which comprises an aqueous liquid vehicle, a colorant, and a drying component selected from the group consisting of zwitterionic compounds; (2) heating the ink in an imagewise pattern to cause bubbles to form therein, thereby causing droplets of the ink to be ejected in an imagewise pattern onto a substrate, thereby generating images on the substrate; and (3) exposing the substrate to microwave radiation, thereby drying the images on the substrate.

The ink composition combines the print quality advantages of xerographic printing with the economic advantages of ink jet printing, thereby providing waterfast, archival quality prints.

Also disclosed are aqueous ink compositions containing the dyes, processes for making the dyes, processes for making the inks containing the dyes, and printing processes employing the inks.
