Properties of progressively censored order statistics and inferential procedures based on progressively censored samples have recently attracted considerable attention in the literature. In this paper, I provide an overview of various developments that have taken place in this direction and also suggest some potential problems of interest for further research.

Progressive censoring methodology: an appraisal

This article is concerned with modifications of both maximum likelihood and moment estimators for parameters of the three-parameter Wei bull distribution. Modifications presented here are basically the same as those previously proposed by the authors (1980, 1981, 1982) in connection with the lognormal and the gamma distributions. Computer programs were prepared for the practical application of these estimators and an illustrative example is included. Results of a simulation study provide insight into the sampling behavior of the new estimators and include comparisons with the traditional moment and maximum likelihood estimators. For some combinations of parameter values, some of the modified estimators considered here enjoy advantages over both moment and maximum likelihood estimators with respect to bias, variance, and/or ease of calculation.

Modified maximum likelihood and modified moment estimators for the three-parameter weibull distribution

This paper is a continuation of previous work concerning progressively censored sampling in the normal and the exponential distribution [1], in the Weibull distribution [4], and in the log-normal distribution [5]. Here maximum likelihood estimators and estimators which utilize the first order statistic are derived for the three-parameter gamma distribution (Pearson's Type III Distribution) when samples are progressively censored. Various special cases are also considered. Illustrative examples involving life test data are included. Some of the sampling properties of the proposed estimators are investigated.

Progressively Censored Sampling in the Three-Parameter Gamma Distribution

The location, shape, and scale parameters of the Weibull distribution are estimated from Type I progressively censored samples by the method of maximum likelihood. Nonlinear logarithmic likelihood estimating equations are derived, and the approximate asymptotic variance-covariance matrix for the maximum likelihood parameter estimates is given. The iterative procedure to solve the likelihood equations is a stable and rapidly convergent constrained modified quasilinearization algorithm which is applicable to the general case in which all three parameters are unknown. The numerical results indicate that, in terms of the number of iterations required for convergence and in the accuracy of the solution, the proposed algorithm is a very effective technique for solving systems of logarithmic likelihood equations for which all iterative approximations to the solution vector must satisfy certain intrinsic constraints on the parameters. A FORTRAN IV program implementing the maximum likelihood estimation procedure is included.

Errata: Solution of the Three-Parameter Weibull Equations by Constrained Modified Quasilinearization (Progressively Censored Samples)

For reasons of time constraint and cost reduction, censoring is commonly employed in practice, especially in reliability engineering. Among various censoring schemes, progressive Type-I right censoring provides not only the practical advantage of known termination time but also greater flexibility to the experimenter in the design stage by allowing for the removal of test units at non-terminal time points. In this article, we consider a progressively Type-I censored life-test under the assumption that the lifetime of each test unit is exponentially distributed. For small to moderate sample sizes, a practical modification is proposed to the censoring scheme in order to guarantee a feasible life-test under progressive Type-I censoring. Under this setup, we obtain the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) of the unknown mean parameter and derive the exact sampling distribution of the MLE under the condition that its existence is ensured. Using the exact distribution of the MLE as well as its asymptotic distribution and the parametric bootstrap method, we then discuss the construction of confidence intervals for the mean parameter and their performance is assessed through Monte Carlo simulations. Finally, an example is presented in order to illustrate all the methods of inference discussed here.

Exact inference for progressively Type-I censored exponential failure data

Monte Carlo simulations are used to investigate the maximum likelihood estimators for the parameters of the Weibull distribution using multicensored samples. For the case of unequal number of items censored, a single situation is considered. When the same number of items are removed at each test, several different estimators are compared for several values of the parameters.
