RFID in highly perishable food supply chains – Remaining shelf life to supplant expiry date?

Coordination and adoption of item-level RFID with vendor managed inventory

Active and intelligent packaging in food can be classified as smart packaging that not only improves food protection and shelf-life, but also provides information regarding food safety and quality. Active packaging performs some active functions that could improve food quality and safety. These active functions, such as active scavengers and emitters, include absorption of oxygen, CO2, and ethylene. The gas emitters are like CO2 and SO2. Control of relative humidity, antioxidants release, absorbtion of undesirable odors, and antimicrobial function have also gained attention recently. Intelligent packaging provides information on the quality and environmental changes inside the packaging. The information on food quality is related to time and temperature, such as sensors or indicators for freshness, time-temperature, integrity, etc. The food quality is detected directly on pH or volatile compounds related to food degradation or microbial growth. While indirect detection is monitored by TTIs (time-temperature indicators) or RFID (radio frequency identification). This smart packaging is mainly used to minimize food losses, as it provides information on the quality and safety of the food throughout distribution till to display, including helping in distribution control, and the stock rotation system. This chapter reviews the current trends in active and intelligent packaging, including their applications for fresh-cut fruits and vegetables at the commercial level.

Active and intelligent packaging, safety, and quality controls

We investigate whether it is possible for the manufacturer as well as the retailer to derive economic benefits from item-level RFID. We consider two supply chain contracts. In the first instance the manufacturer sets the wholesale price for his product and in response the retailer sets the retail price and allocates the shelf-space. We find that in this setting item-level RFID is adopted in a decentralized supply chain at the same levels of RFID costs as in an integrated supply chain with a single decision maker. The second case that we consider involves a powerful retailer setting product shelf-space prices. In this setting the manufacturer essentially rents shelf-space from the retailer. We find that in this setting, the retailer may force the adoption of RFID even if it does not maximize the chain's total profit.

Analytical model of adoption of item level RFID in a two-echelon supply chain with shelf-space and price-dependent demand

Information sharing allows firms to improve their supply chain performance. However, operational and strategic information sharing differ as they are determined by different antecedents. This thesis analyzes and explains inter-dependencies among the antecedents, and their impact on information sharing. Drawing from the analysis, concepts on how to manage the antecedents are developed for achieving mutual information sharing. This allows deriving guidelines for supply chain information sharing.

Information Sharing as a Competitive Supply Chain Strategy: Mapping the Various Antecedents

Efficient Supply Chain Management is the key to a successful business. The decision to deploy a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) solution is a business decision. Through RFID, enterprises hope that they improve their performance and gain competitive advantage. Deciding to deploy an RFID system demands business planning, as it needs significant converting of the way business operates. This article analyses the way RFID is implemented. Specifically, a four-phased framework for RFID implementation is presented in details. The proposed framework can be a useful roadmap for an RFID project implementation.
