Superiority of micro/nano tungsten carbide reinforced poly-methyl methacrylate composites in shielding gamma radiation

This research is aimed at producing radiation shield tiles from cathode ray tube waste glass, borosilicate waste glassand soda lime silicate waste glass. The waste glasses were sourced for and crushed to powder. The powder wassieved through a 0.25 mm sieved with mesh number 60 and analysed using XRF spectrometer to ascertain theirchemical constituents. Twenty-one samples were generated using a 21-point triaxial blend of the three wasteglasses. The various samples were poured into moulds, fired in an electric furnace at 1000oC and soaked for anhour. Radiation shielding test using a radioactive source (cobalt 60) was carried out. The radiation shielding testsshows that sample 1 which comprises of 100% CRT had the highest radiation shielding ability with 0.178 cm-1linear attenuation coefficient and sample 21 which is made up of 100% soda lime silicate glass had the leastradiation shielding ability with 0.109 cm-1 linear attenuation coefficient.According to the 49th NCRP report,conventional tiles HVL for 60-Co gamma is 6.2 cm; whereas HVL for the RST in this work ranges between 3.8-6.3cm which shows that the RST is within the range of offering a good radiation protection. The results obtained in thisstudy showed that the radiation shielding tiles developed can be used as wall tiles in nuclear power facilities andmedical X-ray systems.

Experimental and FLUKA simulation study of CdO /Al2O3 cement waste marble composites for nuclear radiation shielding

Background: Effective shielding design is essential for ensuring radiation safety for both patients and healthcare staff in medical radiation therapy facilities, particularly with high-energy LINACs. This study investigates the shielding design and calculation for a 15-MV versa HD LINAC treatment room at Bangladesh Medical University (BMU), focusing on primary and secondary radiation barriers. Methods: Shielding design and calculation were performed using empirical equations based on NCRP report no. 151 (2005). Maximum photon energy (15 MV) was considered for barrier design. Calculations for primary and secondary barrier thicknesses were performed using workload, use factor, and occupancy factor, with ordinary concrete (2.35 g/cm³) as the material. Radiation levels were measured at various gantry positions (0°, 90°, and 270°) with calibrated radiation detectors. Results: The primary barrier thicknesses were calculated as 2.75 m for east and west sides, and 2.58 m for the roof. Secondary barrier thicknesses for the north, south, and roof sides were 1.02 m, 1.14 m, and 1.18 m, respectively. Radiation measurements at different gantry angles showed a maximum photon dose rate of 2.15 μSv/hr at the main entrance door, with values consistently below 10 μSv/hr at all locations. The standard deviation of dose rates ranged from 0.03 to 0.15 μSv/hr. Statistical analysis showed a p=0.04, indicating significant differences between radiation exposure at different gantry positions. The coefficient of variation (CV) was calculated as 0.23%, confirming low variability in the shielding performance across measurements. Conclusions: The shielding design effectively meets safety standards, with radiation levels well below permissible limits, ensuring the safety of both hospital staff and patients.

Shielding design and calculation of a treatment room for a 15-MV versa HD LINAC at BMU, Dhaka, Bangladesh

Improving mortar shielding properties to preserve environmental and human safety in radiation facilities is essential. Conventional cement mortars, composed of cement, water, and lime aggregate, are crucial for radiation shielding. Using recycled aggregates to produce new mortar and concrete compositions has attracted the attention of several researchers. In the current study, waste marble and iron slag as aggregates are used to create novel cement mortar compositions to study the aggregate’s impact on the radiation attenuation capability of the mortar. Three mortar groups, including a control mortar (CM-Ctrl), were prepared based on cement and waste marble. The other two groups (CM-MIS, CM-NIS), contained 25% iron slag at different particle sizes as a replacement for a waste marble. The study aims to compare iron slag in their micro and nano sizes to discuss the effect of particle size on the mortar radiation capability. For this purpose, the NaI scintillation detector and radioactive point sources (241Am, 133Ba, 137Cs, 60Co, and 152Eu) were utilized to measure several shielding parameters, such as the linear attenuation coefficient (LAC), mass attenuation coefficient (MAC), half-value layer (HVL), tenth-value layer (TVL), and mean free path (MFP), for the produced mortars at different photon energies. Furthermore, the transmission electron microscope (TEM) is used to measure the particle size of the aggregates. In addition, a scanning electron microscope (SEM) is utilized to acquire the cross-section morphologies of the prepared mortars. According to our findings, mortars prepared with nano-iron slag and waste marble offered superior shielding capabilities than mortars containing natural sand or fine crushed stone. The nano iron slag mortar can be utilized in place of typical sand mortar for applications as rendering or plastering materials for building medical diagnostic and CT scanner rooms, due to its improved shielding abilities.
