The number of known periodic variables has grown rapidly in recent years. Thanks to its large field of view and faint limiting magnitude, the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) offers a unique opportunity to detect variable stars in the northern sky. Here, we exploit ZTF Data Release 2 (DR2) to search for and classify variables down to r ~ 20.6 mag. We classify 781,602 periodic variables into 11 main types using an improved classification method. Comparison with previously published catalogs shows that 621,702 objects (79.5%) are newly discovered or newly classified, including ~700 Cepheids, ~5000 RR Lyrae stars, ~15,000 Delta Scuti variables, ~350,000 eclipsing binaries, ~100,000 long-period variables, and about 150,000 rotational variables. The typical misclassification rate and period accuracy are on the order of 2% and 99%, respectively. 74% of our variables are located at Galactic latitudes, $|b|<10^\circ$. This large sample of Cepheids, RR Lyrae, Delta Scuti stars, and contact (EW-type) eclipsing binaries is helpful to investigate the Galaxy's disk structure and evolution with an improved completeness, areal coverage, and age resolution. Specifically, the northern warp and the disk's edge at distances of 15--20 kpc are significantly better covered than previously. Among rotational variables, RS Canum Venaticorum and BY Draconis-type variables can be separated easily. Our knowledge of stellar chromospheric activity would benefit greatly from a statistical analysis of these types of variables.

The Zwicky Transient Facility Catalog of Periodic Variable Stars

We present the results of a multi-component kinematic model of a large sample of RR Lyrae detected by $Gaia$. By imposing a four-fold symmetry and employing $Gaia$ proper motions, we are able to infer the behaviour of the velocity ellipsoid between $\approx3$ and $\approx30$ kpc from the centre of the Galaxy. We detect the presence of two distinct components: a dominant non-rotating halo-like population and a much smaller rotating disc-like population. We demonstrate that the halo RR Lyrae can be described as a superposition of an isotropic and radially-biased parts. The radially-biased portion of the halo is characterised by a high orbital anisotropy $\beta\approx0.9$ and contributes between 50\% and 80\% of the halo RR Lyrae at $5<R$(kpc)$<25$. In line with previous studies, we interpret this high-$\beta$ component as the debris cloud of the ancient massive merger also known as the $Gaia$ Sausage (GS) whose orbital extrema we constrain. The lightcurve properties of the RR Lyrae support the kinematic decomposition: the GS stars are more metal-rich and boast higher fractions of Oosterhoff Type 1 and high amplitude short period (HASP) variables compared to the isotropic halo component. The metallicity/HASP maps reveal that the inner 10 kpc of the halo is likely inhabited by the RR Lyrae born in-situ. The mean azimuthal speed and the velocity dispersion of the disc RR Lyrae out to $R\approx30$ kpc are consistent with the behaviour of a young and metal-rich thin disc stellar population.

Chemo-kinematics of the Gaia RR Lyrae: the halo and the disc

Radial velocities of 2768 fundamental mode RR Lyrae stars (RRLs) toward the Southern Galactic bulge are presented, spanning the southern bulge from -8 500 km/s and find that the majority of these high-velocity stars are halo interlopers; it is unclear if a sub-sample of these stars with similar space velocities have a common origin. Once the 25% of the sample represented by halo interlopers is cleaned, we can clearly discern two populations of bulge RRLs in the inner Galaxy. One population of RRLs is not as tightly bound to the Galaxy (but is still confined to the inner ~3.5 kpc), and is both spatially and kinematically consistent with the barred bulge. The second population is more centrally concentrated and does not trace the bar. One possible interpretation is that this population was born prior to bar formation, as its spatial location, kinematics and pulsation properties suggest, possibly from an accretion event at high redshift.

The Bulge Radial Velocity Assay for RR Lyrae Stars (BRAVA-RR) DR2: A Bimodal Bulge?

We present newly-calibrated period-$\phi_{31}$-[Fe/H] relations for fundamental mode RR Lyrae stars in the optical and, for the first time, mid-infrared. This work's calibration dataset provides the largest and most comprehensive span of parameter space to date with homogeneous metallicities from $-3<\textrm{[Fe/H]}<0.4$ and accurate Fourier parameters derived from 1980 ASAS-SN ($V$-band) and 1083 WISE (NEOWISE extension, $W1$ and $W2$ bands) RR Lyrae stars with well-sampled light curves. We compare our optical period-$\phi_{31}$-[Fe/H] with those available in the literature and demonstrate that our relation minimizes systematic trends in the lower and higher metallicity range. Moreover, a direct comparison shows that our optical photometric metallicities are consistent with both those from high-resolution spectroscopy and globular clusters, supporting the good performance of our relation. We found an intrinsic scatter in the photometric metallicities (0.41 dex in the $V$-band and 0.50 dex in the infrared) by utilizing large calibration datasets covering a broad metallicity range. This scatter becomes smaller when optical and infrared bands are used together (0.37 dex). Overall, the relations derived in this work have many potential applications, including large-area photometric surveys with JWST in the infrared and LSST in the optical.

Metallicity of Galactic RR Lyrae from Optical and Infrared Light Curves. I. Period–Fourier–Metallicity Relations for Fundamental-mode RR Lyrae

We collected a large data set of field RR Lyrae stars (RRLs) by using catalogues already available in the literature and Gaia DR2. We estimated the iron abundances for a sub-sample of 2,382 fundamental RRLs ($\Delta$S method: CaIIK, H$\beta$, H$\gamma$ and H$\delta$ lines) for which are publicly available medium-resolution SDSS-SEGUE spectra. We also included similar estimates available in the literature ending up with the largest and most homogeneous spectroscopic data set ever collected for RRLs (2,903). The metallicity scale was validated by using iron abundances based on high resolution spectra for a fundamental field RRL (V~Ind), for which we collected X-shooter spectra covering the entire pulsation cycle. The peak ([Fe/H]=-1.59$\pm$0.01) and the standard deviation ($\sigma$=0.43 dex) of the metallicity distribution agree quite well with similar estimates available in the literature. The current measurements disclose a well defined metal-rich tail approaching Solar iron abundance. The spectroscopic sample plotted in the Bailey diagram (period vs luminosity amplitude) shows a steady variation when moving from the metal-poor ([Fe/H]=-3.0/-2.5) to the metal-rich ([Fe/H]=-0.5/0.0) regime. The smooth transition in the peak of the period distribution as a function of the metallicity strongly indicates that the long-standing problem of the Oosterhoff dichotomy among Galactic globulars is the consequence of the lack of metal-intermediate clusters hosting RRLs. We also found that the luminosity amplitude, in contrast with period, does not show a solid correlation with metallicity. This suggests that period-amplitude-metallicity relations should be cautiously treated.
