The copious production of charged particles in nuclues-nucleus collisions at SPS energies necessitated new technical solutions for charged-particle measurements. We describe the construction and performance of the streamer-tube detectors used in the experiment WA80 at CERN. Special attention is given to the developed electronic readout system with serial transmission of data from more than 40000 readout pads. About 100 events per beam spill were collected during data taking. For each event the full angular information is recorded for charged particles with polar angles: 2°

Self-quenching streamer-tube detectors in the WA80 experiment

The characteristics of wire chambers with a metal cathode, operating in a self-quenching streamer mode, have been investigated. The influence of inaccuracies, introduced in the assembly of detectors, on their characteristics has been investigated. It is shown, that the unstable operation of streamer tubes with a resistive cathode is a consequence of the graphite varnishing technology.

Some features of streamer tube operation

The aging effect in a conductive plastic streamer tube, with its inner surface coated with silicone oil to suppress spurious discharges, was studied. A gain reduction rate of 16% per C/cm was obtained on a total accumulated charge of 0.57 C/cm. We found no problem for using this type of streamer tube in the TRISTAN VENUS detector in spite of the coating of the inner surfaces of the plastic tubes with silicone oil.

Limits to the energy resolution of a lead-streamer tube sandwich-type photon shower counter were studied by Monte Carlo simulation. It was found that readout ambiguities in the determination of the shower volume are the most significant limiting factor for this type of detector. Reduction of these ambiguities leads to an energy resolution approaching that of most lead-scintillator shower detectors. However, this reduction simultaneously implies increasing the cost of the readout electronics, thus reducing the major advantage of streamer tubes.

Gaseous Radiation Detectors: Fundamentals and Applications

The operating characteristics of plastic streamer tubes chosen as a detector of the DELPHI-LEP hadron calorimeter are described. The work has been performed using a set-up specially designed to investigate a hadron calorimeter prototype on a beam of the Dubna synchrophasotron. The apparatus operated on-line with an ES-1040 computer.
