This paper categorizes self-organization processes in nature into four categories: physics, mathematics, statics, and mechanics—abstracting these processes into simplified analytical methods. It is also an investigation into some fundamental principles concerning the logic of form optimization in nature in relation to special and physical constraints. One of the chief aims of this study is to make a contribution towards a true and complete understanding of optimization processes in nature by dealing with these processes according to their origins, principles, processes, essential features and scope. It has been attempted to establish, both by argument and evidence, that the same optimization processes used in nature can be used in architecture.

It is impossible to imagine modern-time cities without construction systems with translucent insulation coatings. Translucent-coated structures not only ornate any building, but also serve as a life-supporting element. Considering this, the author, based on the review of foreign and national publications, describes the main trends in the application of translucent coatings for engineering and construction of long-span, high-rise and unique buildings. Over the past ten or twelve years, the preference in the global practice of using the above construction systems has been consistently given to polycarbonate and membrane coatings based on ETFE (ethylene tetrafluoroethylene) film. The key reasons for the high popularity of these materials are: blending the boundary between the ambient environment and the inner space of a building utmost utilization of natural light and solar energy to ensure energy efficiency of a building and maximum comfort during its operation creation of facilities embodying a new architectural idea involving the most recent engineering achievements ensuring multi-functionality of a building while preserving traditions and national flavor. Following the analysis of a number of studies, the paper compares the characteristics of glass units filled with aerogel with the characteristics of conventional double and triple-pane glass units, describing their benefits and drawbacks as applied to specific climatic conditions. It is noted that some studies insufficiently explore the safety of spider systems for glazing high-rise and unique buildings in seismically active regions or exposed to hurricane winds.nbsp

Translucent Coatings of Modern Construction Systems

Existing typologies of emergency housing rely heavily on conventional designs, materials and labor-intensive construction methodologies, which in post-disaster environments place large amounts of strain on the surrounding communities, material manufacturers and financial systems. With ever more unpredictable environmental conditions, should our new housing prototypes not also have the ability to simultaneously adapt to rapidly changing environmental conditions? This paper investigates the potential of developing a new typology of rapidly deployable emergency housing prototypes through the creation of a system which relies on embedded design intelligence, advanced fabrication and adaptable systems, rather than attempting to make existing building systems smarter.

Towards an Intelligent Architecture: Creating Adaptive Building Systems for Inhabitation

The paper highlights the relevance of transparent roofing materials for building construction, including unique buildings and structures. In fact, despite their popularity for the past twenty years, there is no accurate classification of transparent roofing materials as yet, which is why they are conventionally categorized into transparent and semi-transparent based on their transmittance characteristics. At the same time, traditional and innovative transparent roofing materials have a number of distinctive features in terms of their transmittance, density, tensile strength, sound absorption, impact resistance etc. The paper presents a comparison of these characteristics in form of diagrams and charts as applicable to commonly used traditional transparent roofing materials, as well as environmental properties, such as: toxicity, chemical stability, fire safety. In order to choose the most environmentally friendly transparent roofing material in the traditional range, the authors suggest a five-point rating scale. The analysis of the traditional materials discussed in this paper has showed that the most optimal, in part of environmental performance, pricing policy and technological specifics, are transparent materials made of fiber reinforced polyester. Among innovative materials of interest are plexiglass, smartglass and materials based on ethylene copolymer and tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE films). Considering a large variety of transparent roofing materials available at the contemporary stage of construction development, the efficiency of a specific material can only be justified as part of a comprehensive assessment of the building functional purpose, architectural, spatial planning and design solutions, and cluster analysis of all related indicators.
