We study the phase dynamics of a single-mode ring laser described by the complex Maxwell-Bloch equations We identify three reference-frame frequencies and determine the properties of the field dynamics observed in these frames In one of these reference frames, the phase jumps are always equal to π, irrespective of the detuning, while in another reference frame quasiperiodic field portraits reduce to periodic field portraits We also apply the recent theory of Ning and Haken [Phys Rev Lett 68, 2109 (1992)] to prove that the laser phase can be decomposed into a geometrical component that is frame invariant and a dynamical component that is frame dependent

Single-mode-laser phase dynamics.

Spontaneous pulsation phenomena in xenon lasers are now well known, and related effects have been observed with other laser types. Most theoretical analyses of such pulsations are formulated for unidirectional ring lasers, whereas most experiments involve standing-wave resonator geometries. Described here are rigorous semiclassical models governing the spontaneous pulsation instability in standing-wave laser oscillators. The standing-wave results are more complex and closer to experimental observations than the ring results for operation in the Lambdip region near line center.

Attractor properties of laser dynamics: a comparison of NH3-laser emission with the Lorenz model

Dynamics of the intensity and optical field amplitude of a coherently pumped far-infrared NH3-laser are measured and characterized. The experimental findings in certain parameter ranges closely follow the dynamics of the Lorenz model and its generalization for laser systems. Similarities and some specific differences are found in geometrical or statistical characterizations of the attractors. The experimental results are also consistent with the results of a model of optically pumped three-level lasers which takes into account the presence of a multiplicity of velocity groups as well as three-level coherence effects. For a certain region in parameter space, this far more complex model with a much larger phase space produces results similar to the dynamics of the Lorenz model. The model also provides explanations of differences between the experimental results and results from the Lorenz model.

Models, predictions, and experimental measurements of far-infrared nh3-laser dynamics and comparisons with the lorenz-haken model

The basic features characterizing the dynamical evolution of the phase of a detuned-laser field under an unstable regime are physically interpreted in terms of dispersive and dynamical effects. A general method for obtaining any attractor projection containing the phase information is established, which provides evidence for the heteroclinic character of the attractor in the presence of cavity detuning for any emission regime.
