INTRODUCTION The thermal stability of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) as one of the major manufacturing problems has been dealt with quite extensively for some decades. Apparently, there seems to be no remaining problem in processing PVC, because excellent stabilizers have been developed for use with it. However, there are still wide discrepancies among reported papers [1–14] on the mechanism of dehydrochlorination of PVC and the mechanism of stabilization by thermal stabilizers. The thermal decomposition of PVC is primarily a dehydrochlorination reaction [15], both in nitrogen and oxygen. However, it is a formidable task to summarize the reported results because of the difficulties associated with the characterization of prepared PVC. Therefore, improving the formulation from the economical and toxicological standpoint has been considered a real problem. Moreover, the explanation for the role of each additive in the field of processing has been done only through personal knowledge.

A dehydrochlorination apparatus is described for studies of the early stages of the thermal degradation of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), combining good reproducibility, high accuracy, and a low detection limit. The evolved hydrogen chloride is absorbed in water and the electrical conductivity is continuously recorded. Measurements of the rate of dehydrochlorination repeated over an extended period of time showed a standard deviation of 2% of the mean value. The activation energies for the dehydrochlorination in nitrogen for two commercial suspension-polymerized samples were found to be 27.9 ± 1.5 and 26.2 ± 0.6 kcal/mole.

The thermal dehydrochlorination of PVC has been examined on some samples prepared by fractionation of a commercial PVC, and some other samples obtained by polymerization at different temperatures. The results disagree with the concept of a continuous dehydrochlorination from one side to the other of the chain, that necessitates initiating structural anomalies in the macromolecule itself.
