Algorithms are developed for a real-time, automatic system capable of tracking two-dimensional (2-D) targets in complex scenes. A mathematical model of 2-D image spatial and temporal evolution applicable to certain classes of targets and target perturbations is developed. It is shown that for small target perturbations the 2-D tracking problem may be approximated as a 1-D time-varying parameter estimation problem. A CCD-implementable solution is developed which is particularly useful when considering target rotation and dilation and target/background separation. Results of system simulation and suggestions for future research are presented.

A Model and Tracking Algorithm for a Class of Video Targets

This paper describes the design, construction, and testing of a thyristorized speed control unit for a separately excited dc motor. The motor is fed from a three-phase six-pulse fully controlled thyristor bridge. A speed loop with a proportional plus integral controller maintains the desired speed irrespective of the load variations on the motor. An inner current control loop protects the thyristors from overcurrents. This loop also provides fast response overcoming the effect of disturbances such as variations in supply voltage. The design aspects of the control loops are discussed, and experimental results are given.

A Fast-Response DC Motor Speed Control System

The paper is concerned with the stability of closed-loop control systems incorporating controlled rectifiers. A suitable small-signal model for a convertor is developed which takes into account the discrete behaviour of the controlled rectifier. This model permits the use of standard sampled-data control-system theory in the stability analysis of the system. Contrary to usual practice, the a.c. system reactance is not neglected in the modelling. It is shown that the commutation angle is an important factor in the determination of stability boundaries. Finally, again-correction factor is employed to allow for the effect of the ripple under finite-commutation-angle conditions. Discrete Laplace transformation (z transformation) is used throughout the analysis together with root-locus techniques. Stability boundaries derived from the new model and other existing models are compared, and it is shown that experimental results are in good agreement with the theory developed in this paper.

Stability study of controlled rectifiers using a new discrete model

Phase shift for the ramp-comparator pulsewidth modulator (PWM) between a continuous input control signal and the signal frequency component of the output is analyzed. It is shown that transport lag is not implicit to these PWM systems in general but rather depends upon the existence of explicit delays between the time at which a switching decision is made and the time at which that decision is executed.

The control strategy, machine-converter and controller transfer functions, the problems associated with discontinuous conduction, and power flow reversal are considered. Four-quadrant DC variable-speed drives&#8212;Design considerations

A linear model for use in determining stability, relative stability, and dynamic response of phase-angle modulated SCR systems is presented. The model is based on sampled-data control theory and assumes 1) a system bandwidth that is small relative to sampling frequency, and 2) limited excursion of the SCR triggering angle. These assumptions are justified for practical systems. The theory leads to a simple equivalent transport-lag representation. If the triggering angle varies over a relatively wide range, a "worst-case" analysis is necessary using the linear model. An example is included to illustrate use of the model for system design and is supported by experimental data.

A theoretical model for single-phase silicon-controlled rectifier systems

The application of charge-coupled device (CCD) processors to automatic-control systems is suggested. CCD processors are a new form of semiconductor component with the unique ability to process sampled signals on an analog basis. Specific implementations of controllers are suggested for linear time-invariant, time-varying, and nonlinear systems. Typical processing time should be only a few microseconds. This form of technology may become competitive with microprocessors and minicomputers in addition to supplementing them.
