With increasing demand for high power levels at optimized size, Point-of-Load (POL) converters are gaining popularity. Going by the name, POL converters are dc-dc converters dedicatedly designed for a particular load. These converters find their main use in space and defense applications that require very low and regulated voltages and higher currents, fast switching operations. This paper deals with the design and analysis of a POL system, for a space application fed from a 12V source, at 500 kHz. Closed loop implementation has been done using peak current mode control and the hardware results have been analyzed.

Non-Isolated Point-Of-Load Converter for Space Application

The authors discuss high-voltage power conversion. Conventional series connection and three-level voltage source inverter techniques are reviewed and compared. A novel versatile multilevel commutation cell is introduced: it is shown that this topology is safer and more simple to control, and delivers purer output waveforms. The authors show how this technique can be applied to either choppers or voltage-source inverters and generalized to any number of switches.<<ETX>>

Multi-level conversion : high voltage choppers and voltage-source inverters

This study proposes a modular multilevel inverter for low-voltage applications, including ac-coupled renewables and energy storage systems. These inverters require many switches and gate drivers in their structures, which complicates the control system, reduces efficiency, and increases costs. This study introduces a new modular multilevel inverter that can produce five levels of positive voltage using only six power switches and five DC voltage sources. The basic unit is composed of a single- and double-source (SDS) unit. SDS reduces the number of power electronic components, such as the insulated gate bipolar transistors, freewheeling diodes, gate driver circuits, dc voltage sources, and blocking voltage by switches. The proposed topology can boost the number of output voltage levels and decrease the number of switching devices and voltage stress using some combinations of basic submodules. The performance of the proposed 11-level single-phase inverter is compared with that of the conventional structures and recent symmetric topologies considering the number of switches, cost, and efficiency. The waveform quality and both the voltage and current harmonic characteristics were determined in accordance with IEEE 519–2014. Finally, an 11-level prototype was constructed to validate the theoretical analysis, feasibility, and effectiveness of the proposed inverter.

A new symmetric modular eleven‐level inverter using single and double source unit for low voltage applications with reduced number of switches

Multi Level Inverter generates output voltage with very low harmonic distortion. This is achieved by providing multiple steps in the output voltage. They are used for high power applications with improved power quality. Circuit complexity is a major issue in most of the conventional topologies of Multi Level Inverters. As the number of levels increases, the no of switches will increase and the switching scheme will be more complicated. In this paper, a modified reduced switch inverter topology with unequal switching scheme is used to drive a single phase induction motor load. Simulation and result analysis of this 11 level MLI is carried out using PSIM software and hardware implementation is carried out to evaluate the performance to prove the effectiveness of the MLI.
