Changes in the abundance and distribution of marine benthic hydrozoan species are indicative of variations in environmental conditions in the marine realm. The comparative analysis of such assemblages can improve our understanding of environmental and ecological conditions in the Sea of Marmara, a strongly stratified and heavily populated inland sea connecting the Aegean and Black seas, on route of national and international maritime traffic. We compared the hydrozoan assemblages occurring in harbours with those developed at natural sites, as well as the assemblages associated with the Black Sea water mass versus the Mediterranean water mass in the vicinities of the Prince Islands, the north-easternmost section of the Sea of Marmara. Sampling took place at 12 stations, once in March 2015 and once in August 2015 in order to cover species with both warm and cold water affinities. Multivariate analyses showed that benthic hydroid assemblages with both affinities differed significantly between the heavily trafficked harbours of the Prince Islands (connected to the metropolis of Istanbul) and areas without human settlements and maritime traffic. In addition, highly distinct hydroid assemblages were found characterizing both areas with water of Mediterranean origin and areas with water from Black Sea origin. Based on our results, we discuss the potential for the use of these organisms as indicators of water masses and anthropogenic impact at the regional level.

Benthic Hydrozoans as Potential Indicators of Water Masses and Anthropogenic Impact in the Sea of Marmara

The comparative study of marine benthic hydrozoan assemblages can improve our understanding of environmental and ecological conditions in marine protected areas (MPAs) such as the large Mediterranean MPA of Datca-Bozburun, where important prospects for future intensive tourism development exist. The analysis of such assemblages may help managers detect changes in important parameters of ecosystem health within this MPA. In this study we compared the hydrozoan assemblages occurring on hard (rocky) and soft ( Posidonia meadows) bottoms from stations belonging to three different conditions: i) small marinas (medium anthropogenic impact), ii) yacht stopovers (low impact), and iii) unspoiled sites (no impact) in the southern part of the Datca Peninsula during summer and winter 2015 and 2016. Significant differences in the structure, species composition and richness of benthic hydrozoans among the sampling sites were detected. In both seasons, hydroid assemblages in medium-impact sites significantly differed from little-impact and no-impact sites in terms of qualitative composition. Large structural species were widely represented in all hard-bottomed sampling sites, but small inconspicuous taxa with diverse life histories were much less abundant at the medium impacted sites. Species richness and diversity in Posidonia meadows was much higher in little- and no-impact sites, where highly specific hydroid epibionts were abundant.

Epiphytic hydroids on Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows are winner organisms under future ocean acidification conditions: evidence from a CO2 vent system (Ischia Island, Italy)

The aim of the present study is to assess the spatial distribution and habitat preferences of the cryptobenthic fish assemblages around the Gokceada Island, where no study on these species were previously conducted. A total of 51 quadrats of 1 m2 were applied to 12 sites at the depths of 0–15 m in June, August and October 2017. The cryptobenthic fishes were studied by anaesthetic sampling. A total of 187 cryptobenthic fish specimens of 23 species were observed and 111 of them were obtained. The results showed that the 0–1 m depth zone is dominated by the blennies and shows greater density than 1–15 depth zone, where gobies are outnumbered. The average abundance of cryptobenthic fish was 3.7 individuals/m2 and Gobius incognitus represented 21% of all individuals. Among the studied species, Parablennius incognitus and P. zvonimiri were only found within 0–1 m, preferring rocky substrates with short thallus algae. Coryphoblennius galerita was found on bare rocky surfaces, mostly in 0–1 m depth interval and Microlipophrys canevae preferred rocky surfaces with short thallus algae covers in as well very shallow waters. While Lepadogasterlepadogaster preferred the depths between 3–5 m, L. candolii was observed in a wider depth range (1 and 6 m).

The hydroid fauna of the Mediterranean Sea is considered one of the best known in the world, but the hydrozoans of the Aegean Sea remain poorly studied, hindering efforts to identify alien and invasive species in the region. The spatial and seasonal composition of the shallow-water (0–20 m depth) benthic hydrozoan assemblage from Gokceada Island was investigated in summer 2012 and winter 2013. Overall, 48 hydrozoan taxa were identified, and their presence and ecological features are discussed herein. Twelve species are recorded for the first time in the Aegean Sea, and the same number for the Turkish coasts. Differences in species composition were detected between the northern and southern coasts of Gokceada by cluster, multidimensional scaling (MDS) and permutational multivariate analysis of variance (PERMANOVA) analysis, whereas seasonal and vertical distribution patterns were not statistically significant.
