High performance communications applications have made technology choices more important than ever. Silicon Germanium (SiGe) BiCMOS has enabled the widespread introduction of many these applications by providing superior cost and integration capability, compared to III-V solutions and, relative to RFCMOS, one can attain better time to market. BiCMOS integration approaches for high performance and cost performance NPN modules and state of the art passive elements are discussed as well as future technology directions.

SiGe BiCMOS Trends - Today and Tomorrow

The recent history of Ultrawideband communications technology has seen great debate over whether UWB causes unacceptable interference to existing users of the same and nearby bands, particularly in 3-5 GHz. In the current regulatory environment, the UWB industry must work with incumbent users to implement interference mitigation techniques that are generally called Detect and Avoid (DAA). Because of the difficulties in practical DAA implementation, UWB products designed for global deployment will quickly migrate to bands above 6 GHz. Design of UWB chipsets that span the entire range from 3.1-10.6 GHz will be highly desirable, but these pose daunting challenges to RF ASIC designers.

Technology Tradeoffs for a Worldwide UWB Transceiver

An ultra wideband network transmitter (200) and receiver, and a method capable of switching to a high-speed mode or a low-speed mode are provided. The transmitter includes a multi-band orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MB-OFDM) modem (216); a direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) modem (212); a mode switch (220) which switches to the MB-OFDM modem or the DS-CDMA modem according to a mode control signal; a phase lock loop (PLL) (290) which locks a frequency used for MB-OFDM type modulation or the DS-CDMA type modulation; and a central processing unit (CPU) (222) controls the PLL and mode switch. The receiver includes an MB-OFDM modem; an DS-CDMA modem; an automatic gain controller; an analog-to-digital converter; an PLL; a mode switch; and an CPU. The method includes receiving a command to transmit data; and switching to an MB-OFDM modem to select to a high-speed operation mode.

The enablement of advanced RF applications with CMOS is discussed. This is accomplished through a broad menu of low-cost and high-performance modular technology features with accompanying scalable devices models which are accurate to frequencies well above application conditions.
