If gravitational clustering is a hierarchical process, the present large-scale structure of the galaxy distribution implies that structures on smaller scales must have formed at high redshift. We simulate the formation of small-scale structure (average cell mass: $\Delta \bar m_b=10^{4.2}$M$_\odot$) and the evolution of photoionized gas, in the specific case of a CDM model with a cosmological constant. The photoionized gas has a natural minimal scale of collapse, the Jeans scale ($m_{b,J}\simeq 10^{9}$M$_\odot$). We find that low column density ($\nhi \le 10^{14}\cm^{-2}$) lines originate in regions resembling Zel'dovich pancakes, where gas with overdensities in the range $3 - 30$ is enclosed by two shocks but is typically re-expanding at approximately the Hubble velocity. However, higher column density ($\nhi \ge 10^{15}\cm^{-2}$) lines stem from more overdense regions where the shocked gas is cooling. We show that this model can probably account for the observed number of lines, their distribution in column density and b-parameters, as well as the cloud physical sizes as observed in gravitationally lensed quasars. Gravitational Collapse of Small-Scale Structure as the Origin of the Lyman Alpha Forest

Within the standard three-neutrino framework, the absolute neutrino masses and their ordering (either normal, NO, or inverted, IO) are currently unknown. However, the combination of current data coming from oscillation experiments, neutrinoless double beta ($0\ensuremath{\nu}\ensuremath{\beta}\ensuremath{\beta}$) decay searches, and cosmological surveys, can provide interesting constraints for such unknowns in the sub-eV mass range, down to $O({10}^{\ensuremath{-}1})\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{eV}$ in some cases. We discuss current limits on absolute neutrino mass observables by performing a global data analysis that includes the latest results from oscillation experiments, $0\ensuremath{\nu}\ensuremath{\beta}\ensuremath{\beta}$ decay bounds from the KamLAND-Zen experiment, and constraints from representative combinations of Planck measurements and other cosmological data sets. In general, NO appears to be somewhat favored with respect to IO at the level of $\ensuremath{\sim}2\ensuremath{\sigma}$, mainly by neutrino oscillation data (especially atmospheric), corroborated by cosmological data in some cases. Detailed constraints are obtained via the ${\ensuremath{\chi}}^{2}$ method, by expanding the parameter space either around separate minima in NO and IO or around the absolute minimum in any ordering. Implications for upcoming oscillation and nonoscillation neutrino experiments, including $\ensuremath{\beta}$-decay searches, are also discussed.

Global constraints on absolute neutrino masses and their ordering

The nuclear matrix elements that govern the rate of neutrinoless double beta decay must be accurately calculated if experiments are to reach their full potential. Theorists have been working on the problem for a long time but have recently stepped up their efforts as ton-scale experiments have begun to look feasible. Here we review past and recent work on the matrix elements in a wide variety of nuclear models and discuss work that will be done in the near future. Ab initio nuclear-structure theory, which is developing rapidly, holds out hope of more accurate matrix elements with quantifiable error bars.

Status and future of nuclear matrix elements for neutrinoless double-beta decay: a review.

We show that, within the quasiparticle random phase approximation (QRPA) and the renormalized QRPA (RQRPA) based on the Bonn-CD nucleon-nucleon interaction, the competition between the pairing and the neutron-proton particle-particle and particle-hole interactions causes contributions to the neutrinoless double-beta decay matrix element to nearly vanish at internucleon distances of more than 2 or 3 fermis. As a result, the matrix element is more sensitive to short-range/high-momentum physics than one naively expects. We analyze various ways of treating that physics and quantify the uncertainty it produces in the matrix elements, with three different treatments of short-range correlations.

Anatomy of the 0νββ nuclear matrix elements

A general formalism is presented for violations of Lorentz and CPT symmetry in the neutrino sector. The effective Hamiltonian for neutrino propagation in the presence of Lorentz and CPT violation is derived, and its properties are studied. Possible definitive signals in existing and future neutrino-oscillation experiments are discussed. Among the predictions are direction-dependent effects, including neutrino-antineutrino mixing, sidereal and annual variations, and compass asymmetries. Other consequences of Lorentz and CPT violation involve unconventional energy dependences in oscillation lengths and mixing angles. A variety of simple models both with and without neutrino masses are developed to illustrate key physical effects. The attainable sensitivities to coefficients for Lorentz violation in the Standard-Model Extension are estimated for various types of experiments. Many experiments have potential sensitivity to Planck-suppressed effects, comparable to the best tests in other sectors. The lack of existing experimental constraints, the wide range of available coefficient space, and the variety of novel effects imply that some or perhaps even all of the existing data on neutrino oscillations might be due to Lorentz and CPT violation.

Lorentz and CPT violation in neutrinos

Compelling evidences in favor of neutrino masses and mixing obtained in the last years in Super-Kamiokande, SNO, KamLAND and other neutrino experiments made the physics of massive and mixed neutrinos a frontier field of research in particle physics and astrophysics. There are many open problems in this new field. In this review we consider the problem of the absolute values of neutrino masses, which apparently is the most difficult one from the experimental point of view. We discuss the present limits and the future prospects of beta-decay neutrino mass measurements and neutrinoless double-beta decay. We consider the important problem of the calculation of nuclear matrix elements of neutrinoless double-beta decay and discuss the possibility to check the results of different model calculations of the nuclear matrix elements through their comparison with the experimental data. We discuss the upper bound of the total mass of neutrinos that was obtained recently from the data of the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey and other cosmological data and we discuss future prospects of the cosmological measurements of the total mass of neutrinos. We discuss also the possibility to obtain information on neutrino masses from the observation of the ultra high-energy cosmic rays (beyond the GZK cutoff). Finally, we review the main aspects of the physics of core-collapse supernovae, the limits on the absolute values of neutrino masses from the observation of SN1987A neutrinos and the future prospects of supernova neutrino detection.
