We have grown single crystals of the ternary uranium compound U{sub 2}Rh{sub 3}Si{sub 5} which crystallizes in a monoclinic Lu{sub 2}Co{sub 3}Si{sub 5} structure with space group C2/c. U{sub 2}Rh{sub 3}Si{sub 5} exhibits a single dramatic phase transition at 25.6K. Here the specific heat peaks to more than 100J/U-molK, and the magnetic susceptibility is strongly anisotropic and shows a steplike drop at the ordering temperature. The electrical resistivity is also anisotropic with indications for the appearance of superzone and spin-wave gaps. Transport and magnetic properties of U2Ni2Sn and U2Co2Sn

The parent BiPbSr2Ca2Cu3O10 (BPSCCO) and samples of the general formula Bi1-(x+y)NdxTbyPbSr2Ca2Cu3O10, where x = y = 0.05, 0.1 and 0.2, were prepared using the conventional high-temperature solid-state reaction technique. The superconducting measurements proved that the best value of Tc, 108 K, is for the sample with x = y = 0.1 mol% while the lowest value of Tc, 101 K, is for the sample with maximum dopant concentration x = y = 0.2 mol%. The evaluated crystalline lattice structure of the prepared samples mainly belongs to the superconductive tetragonal phase (2223) besides the secondary (2212) phase. Also, thermogravimetric and differential thermal analyses were studied on the green mixture showing an endothermic peak at 790 °C corresponding to the superconductive phase formation. The microstructures of the prepared samples were investigated by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive x-ray analysis.

Magnetic structure of U2(Ru0.65Rh0.35)3Si5 silicide

The physical properties including magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and electrical resistivity of two new plutonium compounds Pu2M3Si5 (M = Co, Ni) are reported. Pu2Ni3Si5 crystallizes in the orthorhombic U2Co3Si5 structure type, which can be considered a variant of the BaAl4 tetragonal structure, while Pu2Co3Si5 adopts the closely related monoclinic Lu2Co3Si5 type. Magnetic order is observed in both compounds, with Pu2Ni3Si5 ordering ferromagnetically at T(C) = 65 K then undergoing a transition into an antiferromagnetic state below T(N) = 35 K. Two successive magnetic transitions are also observed at T(mag1) = 38 K and T(mag2) = 5 K in Pu2Co3Si5. Specific heat measurements reveal that these two materials have a moderately enhanced Sommerfeld coefficient γ ∼ 100 mJ/mol Pu K(2) in the magnetic state with comparable RKKY and Kondo energy scales.

With XRD, R-T, and ac chi measurements a comparative study on the doping effects of 3d elements in Bi(1.5)Pb(0.2)Sr(2)Ca(2)Cu(2.8)M(0.2)O(y) (M = Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, or Zn) has been carried out. The effects of the former five members are significantly different, both on phase formed and on T-c, from the latter four. It seems that the effect on phase stabilization correlates with the valency of the doped cation. In connection with the instability of the 2223 phase, the correlation has been discussed.
