Microcode compaction is the conversion of sequential microcode into efficient parallel (horizontal) microcode. Local compaction techniques are those whose domain is basic blocks of code, while global methods attack code with a general flow control. Compilation of high-level microcode languages into efficient horizontal microcode and good hand coding probably both require effective global compaction techniques.

Trace Scheduling: A Technique for Global Microcode Compaction

In the last three decades a large number of compiler transformations for optimizing programs have been implemented. Most optimizations for uniprocessors reduce the number of instructions executed by the program using transformations based on the analysis of scalar quantities and data-flow techniques. In contrast, optimizations for high-performance superscalar, vector, and parallel processors maximize parallelism and memory locality with transformations that rely on tracking the properties of arrays using loop dependence analysis.This survey is a comprehensive overview of the important high-level program restructuring techniques for imperative languages, such as C and Fortran. Transformations for both sequential and various types of parallel architectures are covered in depth. We describe the purpose of each transformation, explain how to determine if it is legal, and give an example of its application.Programmers wishing to enhance the performance of their code can use this survey to improve their understanding of the optimizations that compilers can perform, or as a reference for techniques to be applied manually. Students can obtain an overview of optimizing compiler technology. Compiler writers can use this survey as a reference for most of the important optimizations developed to date, and as bibliographic reference for the details of each optimization. Readers are expected to be familiar with modern computer architecture and basic program compilation techniques.

Compiler transformations for high-performance computing

The performance tradeoff between hardware complexity and clock speed is studied. First, a generic superscalar pipeline is defined. Then the specific areas of register renaming, instruction window wakeup and selection logic, and operand bypassing are analyzed. Each is modeled and Spice simulated for feature sizes of 0.8µm, 0.35µm, and 0.18µm. Performance results and trends are expressed in terms of issue width and window size. Our analysis indicates that window wakeup and selection logic as well as operand bypass logic are likely to be the most critical in the future.A microarchitecture that simplifies wakeup and selection logic is proposed and discussed. This implementation puts chains of dependent instructions into queues, and issues instructions from multiple queues in parallel. Simulation shows little slowdown as compared with a completely flexible issue window when performance is measured in clock cycles. Furthermore, because only instructions at queue heads need to be awakened and selected, issue logic is simplified and the clock cycle is faster --- consequently overall performance is improved. By grouping dependent instructions together, the proposed microarchitecture will help minimize performance degradation due to slow bypasses in future wide-issue machines.

Branch prediction strategies and branch target buffer design

Superscalar machines can issue several instructions per cycle. Superpipelined machines can issue only one instruction per cycle, but they have cycle times shorter than the latency of any functional unit. In this paper these two techniques are shown to be roughly equivalent ways of exploiting instruction-level parallelism. A parameterizable code reorganization and simulation system was developed and used to measure instruction-level parallelism for a series of benchmarks. Results of these simulations in the presence of various compiler optimizations are presented. The average degree of superpipelining metric is introduced. Our simulations suggest that this metric is already high for many machines. These machines already exploit all of the instruction-level parallelism available in many non-numeric applications, even without parallel instruction issue or higher degrees of pipelining.

We postulate an infinite machine, one with an infinite memory and instruction stack, infinite registers and memory, and an infinite number of functional units. This machine wiU exectite a program in parallel at maximum speed by executing each instruction at the earliest possible moment.
