■ Abstract This review examines the discovery of naturally occurring phytochemicals antagonistic toward plant-parasitic and other nematodes. Higher plants have yielded a broad spectrum of active compounds, including polythienyls, isothiocyanates, glucosinolates, cyanogenic glycosides, polyacetylenes, alkaloids, lipids, terpenoids, sesquiterpenoids, diterpenoids, quassinoids, steroids, triterpenoids, simple and complex phenolics, and several other classes. Many other antinematodal compounds have been isolated from biocontrol and other fungi. Natural products active against mammalian parasites can serve as useful sources of compounds for examination of activity against plant parasites. The agricultural utilization of phytochemicals, although currently uneconomic in many situations, offers tremendous potential.

Phytochemical based strategies for nematode control.

The efficacy of benzaldehyde (benzoic aldehyde), citral (3,7-dimethyl-2,6-octadienal), furfural (2-furaldehyde), menthol (5-methyl-2-(1-methylethyl)cyclohexanol), and ?alpha-terpineol (?alpha, ?alpha, 4-trimethyl-3-cyclohexene-1-methanol) for management of Meloidogyne incognita was tested on 'Deltapine 50' cotton (Gossipium hirsutum) in a greenhouse experiment. Mixing these compounds into a sandy loam soil-sand mixture at rates ranging from 0.1 to 0.5 ml/kg reduced the number of M. incognita juveniles in cotton roots and soil. The number of galls/g root tissue was reduced, and the compounds had no adverse effects on cotton growth. The percentage of root colonized by vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizae (VAM) was decreased with increasing concentrations of compounds. Citral and menthol significantly increased plant height at all rates of application. Benzaldehyde, citral, and furfural were tested in field microplots at rates ranging from 0.18 to 2.14 ml/kg soil. Citral (3 , 7 - dimethyl - 2 , 6 - octadienal) , furfural (2 - furaldehyde) and benzaldehyde (benzoic adel hyde) previously demonstrated control activity against Meloidogyne incognita and fungal diseases on cotton . Plant growth - promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) applied to cotton were previously found to promote plant growth and reduce seedling disease . Studies were under taken to determine if these compounds were compatible with PGPR . In tests with 12 PGPR strains , vapor of citral inhibited in vitro growth of most strains , and vapor of furfural and benzaldehyde , with one exception , killed all but the Bacillus spp . tested . When 0 . 35 ml kg 1 soil of each compound were applied to the soil 9 - 10 days prior to planting the cotton cultivar Deltapine 51 , only furfural significantly reduced rhizosphere colonization across all strains from 4 . 70 colony - forming units (CFUs) / g of root to 4 . 42 CFUs / g root .
