Constraint programming is a powerful paradigm for solving combinatorial search problems that draws on a wide range of techniques from artificial intelligence, computer science, databases, programming languages, and operations research. Constraint programming is currently applied with success to many domains, such as scheduling, planning, vehicle routing, configuration, networks, and bioinformatics.

The aim of this handbook is to capture the full breadth and depth of the constraint programming field and to be encyclopedic in its scope and coverage. While there are several excellent books on constraint programming, such books necessarily focus on the main notions and techniques and cannot cover also extensions, applications, and languages. The handbook gives a reasonably complete coverage of all these lines of work, based on constraint programming, so that a reader can have a rather precise idea of the whole field and its potential. Of course each line of work is dealt with in a survey-like style, where some details may be neglected in favor of coverage. However, the extensive bibliography of each chapter will help the interested readers to find suitable sources for the missing details. Each chapter of the handbook is intended to be a self-contained survey of a topic, and is written by one or more authors who are leading researchers in the area.

The intended audience of the handbook is researchers, graduate students, higher-year undergraduates and practitioners who wish to learn about the state-of-the-art in constraint programming. No prior knowledge about the field is necessary to be able to read the chapters and gather useful knowledge. Researchers from other fields should find in this handbook an effective way to learn about constraint programming and to possibly use some of the constraint programming concepts and techniques in their work, thus providing a means for a fruitful cross-fertilization among different research areas.

The handbook is organized in two parts. The first part covers the basic foundations of constraint programming, including the history, the notion of constraint propagation, basic search methods, global constraints, tractability and computational complexity, and important issues in modeling a problem as a constraint problem. The second part covers constraint languages and solver, several useful extensions to the basic framework (such as interval constraints, structured domains, and distributed CSPs), and successful application areas for constraint programming.

Handbook of Constraint Programming

The notion of a fuzzy set stems from considering sets where, in the words of Zadeh, the "transition from non-membership to membership is gradual rather than abrupt". This paper introduces a new concept in fuzzy set theory, that of a gradual element. It embodies the idea of fuzziness only, thus contributing to the distinction between fuzziness and imprecision. A gradual element is to an element of a set what a fuzzy set is to a set. A gradual element is as precise as an element, but the former is flexible while the latter is fixed. The gradual nature of an element may express the idea that the choice of this element depends on a parameter expressing some relevance or describing some concept. Applications of this notion to fuzzy cardinality, fuzzy interval analysis, fuzzy optimization, and defuzzification principles are outlined.

We discuss two closely related interval arithmetic systems: i) the system of directed (generalized) intervals studied by E. Kaucher, and ii) the system of normal intervals together with the outer and inner interval operations. A relation between the two systems becomes feasible due to introduction of special notations and a so-called normal form of directed intervals. As an application, it has been shown that both interval systems can be used for the computation of tight inner and outer inclusions of ranges of functions and consequently for the development of software for automatic computation of ranges of functions.

Interval linear systems as a necessary step in fuzzy linear systems

The aim of the paper is to present a practical solution to a particular real-life problem of discrete flow control in a manufacturing system. For this purpose a fuzzy Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) method, which is an extension of the Fuzzy Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (FTOPSIS) approach using Ordered Fuzzy Numbers (OFNs), is used. The paper includes a case study of the application of this method as a flow controller for the transport trolley in a flexible manufacturing system. The immediate aim of control is to choose the transport trolleys destination (production line). A set of criteria (parameters) for the evaluation of the flows destination is suggested, related to time efficiency and equal workload of machines. The advantage of the proposed method is its ability to distinguish the type of criteria (benefit, cost) by using the orientation of ordered fuzzy numbers. An example of calculations using the presented method is shown and the results of the method, based on the simulation of a manufacturing system, are presented. The results thus obtained are compatible with flexible automation. In order to test the FTOPSIS method with OFNs the proposed flow control method is compared with the TOPSIS method and other simple control methods (dispatching rules). The proposed method is more efficient than the methods used for comparison and can be effective and efficient for diversified production and fast, automatic changeovers on production lines.
