Rules of encounter: designing conventions for automated negotiation among computers

In utility-driven cluster computing, cluster Resource Management Systems (RMSs) need to know the specific needs of different users in order to allocate resources according to their needs. This in turn is vital to achieve service-oriented Grid computing that harnesses resources distributed worldwide based on users' objectives. Recently, numerous market-based RMSs have been proposed to make use of real-world market concepts and behavior to assign resources to users for various computing platforms. The aim of this paper is to develop a taxonomy that characterizes and classifies how market-based RMSs can support utility-driven cluster computing in practice. The taxonomy is then mapped to existing market-based RMSs designed for both cluster and other computing platforms to survey current research developments and identify outstanding issues. A taxonomy of market-based resource management systems for utility-driven cluster computing

Nowadays, we are living in a time of important technological changes that affect our lives at home and our communication with the outside world. Among them, the developments in Interactive Digital TV (IDTV) and the smart home field can be considered as particularly important. Related to the former, the new Set-Top Boxes (STBs) are not only a decoder for digital television broadcast but also an entry point to the Information Society and a suitable platform to support the execution of interactive applications. With regards to the latter, the Residential Gateways (RGs) combine different network technologies to allow the connection of different electronics devices and appliances at home, not only with each other but also with the Internet. Since there is no widespread consensus about the configurations and functions of the RGs, we propose to coordinate the two aforementioned worlds by extending the functionality of STBs to become a RG. Our proposal consists of merging the Multimedia Home Platform (MHP), one of the main standard frameworks for IDTV, with Open Service Gateway Initiative (OSGi), the most widely used open platform to set up RGs. To overcome the radically different nature of these specifications—the function-oriented MHP middleware and the service-oriented OSGi framework—we define a new kind of application, coined as XbundLET. This application is able to bridge the gap between the two frameworks and make their interaction feasible. We also show how this proposal has the potential to enable the production of scenarios that cannot currently be put into practice in a natural way. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

MHP-OSGi convergence: a new model for open residential gateways

The recent development in Cloud computing has enabled the realization of delivering computing as an utility. Many industries such as Amazon and Google have started offering Cloud services on a "pay as you go" basis. These advances have led to the evolution of the market infrastructure in the form of a Market Exchange (ME) that facilitates the trading between consumers and Cloud providers. Such market environment eases the trading process by aggregating IT services from a variety of sources, and allows consumers to easily select them. In this paper, we propose a light weight and platform independent ME framework called "Mandi", which allows consumers and providers to trade computing resources according to their requirements. The novelty of Mandi is that it not only gives its users the flexibility in terms of negotiation protocol, but also allows the simultaneous coexistence of multiple trading negotiations. In this paper, we first present the requirements that motivated our design and discuss how these facilitate the trading of compute resources using multiple market models (also called negotiation protocols). Finally, we evaluate the performance of the first prototype of "Mandi" in terms of its scalability.

Mandi: a market exchange for trading utility and cloud computing services

A sustainable market-like computational grid has two characteristics: it must allow resource providers and resource consumers to make autonomous scheduling decisions, and both parties of providers and consumers must have sufficient incentives to stay and play in the market. In this paper, we formulate this intuition of optimizing incentives for both parties as a dual-objective scheduling problem. The two objectives identified are to maximize the success rate of job execution and to minimize fairness deviation among resources. The challenge is to develop a grid scheduling scheme that enables individual participants to make autonomous decisions while producing a desirable emergent property in the grid system; that is, the two systemwide objectives are achieved simultaneously. We present an incentive-based scheduling scheme, which utilizes a peer-to-peer decentralized scheduling framework, a set of local heuristic algorithms, and three market instruments of job announcement, price, and competition degree. The performance of this scheme is evaluated via extensive simulation using synthetic and real workloads. The results show that our approach outperforms other scheduling schemes in optimizing incentives for both consumers and providers, leading to highly successful job execution and fair profit allocation.

Incentive-Based Scheduling for Market-Like Computational Grids

Rapid advancements in processor and networking technologies have led to the evolution of cluster and grid computing frameworks. These high-performance computing environments exploit geographically distributed, diverse resources with the goal of providing efficient computing solutions to all kinds of parallel and distributed applications. OCEAN (Open Computation Exchange and Arbitration Network) provides a scalable market-based infrastructure to such meta-computing frameworks. OCEAN aims to build a marketplace where resources like CPU time, associated memory usage and network bandwidth are the traded commodities. This paper explains the technical challenges faced in the design of OCEAN and discusses our proposed solution. To facilitate finding suitable resources for buyers, we developed efficient matching and evolution protocols for the peer-to-peer matching network. The architecture and various components of OCEAN are described in detail. We implemented OCEAN on Java and .NET platforms and describe results from our preliminary experiments.
