This paper reports the discovery and characterization of the transiting hot giant exoplanet Kepler-17b. The planet has an orbital period of 1.486 days, and radial velocity measurements from the Hobby-Eberly Telescope show a Doppler signal of 419.5+13.3 –15.6 m s–1. From a transit-based estimate of the host star's mean density, combined with an estimate of the stellar effective temperature T eff = 5630 ± 100 from high-resolution spectra, we infer a stellar host mass of 1.06 ± 0.07 M ☉ and a stellar radius of 1.02 ± 0.03 R ☉. We estimate the planet mass and radius to be M P = 2.45 ± 0.11 M J and R P = 1.31 ± 0.02 R J. The host star is active, with dark spots that are frequently occulted by the planet. The continuous monitoring of the star reveals a stellar rotation period of 11.89 days, eight times the planet's orbital period; this period ratio produces stroboscopic effects on the occulted starspots. The temporal pattern of these spot-crossing events shows that the planet's orbit is prograde and the star's obliquity is smaller than 15°. We detected planetary occultations of Kepler-17b with both the Kepler and Spitzer Space Telescopes. We use these observations to constrain the eccentricity, e, and find that it is consistent with a circular orbit (e < 0.011). The brightness temperatures of the planet's infrared bandpasses are = 1880 ± 100 K and = 1770 ± 150 K. We measure the optical geometric albedo Ag in the Kepler bandpass and find Ag = 0.10 ± 0.02. The observations are best described by atmospheric models for which most of the incident energy is re-radiated away from the day side.

The hot-Jupiter Kepler-17b: Discovery, obliquity from stroboscopic starspots, and atmospheric characterization

Young planets offer a direct view of the formation and evolution processes that produced the diverse population of mature exoplanet systems known today. The repurposed Kepler mission K2 is providing the first sample of young transiting planets by observing populations of stars in nearby, young clusters or stellar associations. We report the detection and confirmation of two planets transiting K2-264, an M2.5 dwarf in the 650 Myr old Praesepe open cluster. Using our notch-filter search method on the K2 lightcurve, we identify planets with periods of 5.84 d and 19.66 d. This is currently the second known multi-transit system in open clusters younger than 1 Gyr. The inner planet has a radius of 2.27$_{-0.16}^{+0.20}$ R$_\oplus$ and the outer planet has a radius of 2.77$_{-0.18}^{+0.20}$ R$_\oplus$. Both planets are likely mini-Neptunes. These planets are expected to produce radial velocity signals of 3.4 and 2.7 m/s respectively, which is smaller than the expected stellar variability in the optical ($\simeq$30 m/s), making mass measurements unlikely in the optical, but possible with future near-infrared spectrographs. We use an injection-recovery test to place robust limits on additional planets in the system, and find that planets larger than 2 R$_\oplus$ with periods of 1-20 d are unlikely.

Zodiacal Exoplanets in Time (ZEIT). VIII. A Two-planet System in Praesepe from K2 Campaign 16

We analyze {\it K2} light curves for 794 low-mass ($1 > M_* > 0.1$ $M_{\odot}$) members of the $\approx$650-Myr-old open cluster Praesepe, and measure rotation periods ($P_{rot}$) for 677 of these stars. We find that half of the rapidly rotating $>$0.3 $M_{\odot}$ stars are confirmed or candidate binary systems. The remaining $>0.3$ $M_{\odot}$ fast rotators have not been searched for companions, and are therefore not confirmed single stars. We found previously that nearly all rapidly rotating $>$0.3 $M_{\odot}$ stars in the Hyades are binaries, but we require deeper binary searches in Praesepe to confirm whether binaries in these two co-eval clusters have different $P_{rot}$ distributions. We also compare the observed $P_{rot}$ distribution in Praesepe to that predicted by models of angular-momentum evolution. We do not observe the clear bimodal $P_{rot}$ distribution predicted by Brown (2014) for $>$0.5 $M_{\odot}$ stars at the age of Praesepe, but 0.25$-$0.5 $M_{\odot}$ stars do show stronger bimodality. In addition, we find that $>$60\% of early M dwarfs in Praesepe rotate more slowly than predicted at 650 Myr by Matt et al. (2015), which suggests an increase in braking efficiency for these stars relative to solar-type stars and fully convective stars. The incompleteness of surveys for binaries in open clusters likely impacts our comparison with these models, since the models only attempt to describe the evolution of isolated single stars.

Poking the Beehive From Space: K2 Rotation Periods For Praesepe

Planets in young clusters are powerful probes of the evolution of planetary systems. Here we report the discovery of three planets transiting K2-136 (EPIC 247589423), a late K dwarf in the Hyades (~800 Myr) cluster, and robust detection limits for additional planets in the system. The planets were identified from their K2 light curves, as part of our survey of young clusters and star forming regions. The smallest planet has a radius comparable to Earth (0.99 +/- 0.05 Earth radii), making it one of the few Earth-sized planets with a known, young age. The two larger planets are likely a mini-Neptune and a super-Earth, with radii of 2.91+/-0.11 and 1.45+/-0.10 Earth radii, respectively. The predicted radial velocity signals from these planets are between 0.4 and 2 m/s, achievable with modern precision RV spectrographs. Because the target star is bright (V=11.2) and has relatively low-amplitude stellar variability for a young star (2-6 mmag), EPIC 247589423 hosts the best planets known in a young open cluster for precise radial velocity follow-up, enabling a robust test of earlier claims that young planets are less dense than their older counterparts.

Zodiacal Exoplanets in Time (ZEIT). VI. A Three-planet System in the Hyades Cluster Including an Earth-sized Planet

We report the discovery of a Neptune-size planet (R_p = 3.0 R⊕) in the Hyades Cluster. The host star is in a binary system, comprising a K5V star and M7/8V star with a projected separation of 40 au. The planet orbits the primary star with an orbital period of 17.3 days and a transit duration of 3 hrs. The host star is bright (V = 11.2, J = 9.1) and so may be a good target for precise radial velocity measurements. K2-136A c is the first Neptune-sized planet to be found orbiting in a binary system within an open cluster. The Hyades is the nearest star cluster to the Sun, has an age of 625–750 Myr, and forms one of the fundamental rungs in the distance ladder; understanding the planet population in such a well-studied cluster can help us understand and set constraints on the formation and evolution of planetary systems.

K2-136: A Binary System in the Hyades Cluster Hosting a Neptune-sized Planet

Open clusters have been the focus of several exoplanet surveys but only a few planets have so far been discovered. The \emph{Kepler} spacecraft revealed an abundance of small planets around small, cool stars, therefore, such cluster members are prime targets for exoplanet transit searches. Kepler's new mission, K2, is targeting several open clusters and star-forming regions around the ecliptic to search for transiting planets around their low-mass constituents. Here, we report the discovery of the first transiting planet in the intermediate-age (800 Myr) Beehive cluster (Praesepe). K2-95 is a faint ($\mathrm{Kp = 15.5\,mag}$) $\mathrm{M3.0\pm0.5}$ dwarf from K2's Campaign 5 with an effective temperature of $\mathrm{3471 \pm 124\,K}$, approximately solar metallicity and a radius of $\mathrm{0.402 \pm 0.050 \,R_\odot}$. We detected a transiting planet with a radius of $\mathrm{3.47^{+0.78}_{-0.53} \, R_\oplus}$ and an orbital period of 10.134 days. We combined photometry, medium/high-resolution spectroscopy, adaptive optics/speckle imaging and archival survey images to rule out any false positive detection scenarios, validate the planet, and further characterize the system. The planet's radius is very unusual as M-dwarf field stars rarely have Neptune-sized transiting planets. The comparatively large radius of K2-95b is consistent with the other recently discovered cluster planets K2-25b (Hyades) and K2-33b (Upper Scorpius), indicating systematic differences in their evolutionary states or formation. These discoveries from K2 provide a snapshot of planet formation and evolution in cluster environments and thus make excellent laboratories to test differences between field-star and cluster planet populations.

K2 Discovers a Busy Bee: An Unusual Transiting Neptune Found in the Beehive Cluster

We report the discovery of Kepler-15b, a new transiting exoplanet detected by NASA's Kepler mission. The transit signal with a period of 4.94 days was detected in the quarter 1 (Q1) Kepler photometry. For the first time, we have used the High-Resolution-Spectrograph (HRS) at the Hobby-Eberly Telescope (HET) to determine the mass of a Kepler planet via precise radial velocity (RV) measurements. The 24 HET/HRS radial velocities (RV) and 6 additional measurements from the FIES spectrograph at the Nordic Optical Telescope (NOT) reveal a Doppler signal with the same period and phase as the transit ephemeris. We used one HET/HRS spectrum of Kepler-15 taken without the iodine cell to determine accurate stellar parameters. The host star is a metal-rich ([Fe/H]=0.36+/-0.07) G-type main sequence star with T_eff=5515+/-124 K. The amplitude of the RV-orbit yields a mass of the planet of 0.66+/-0.1 M_Jup. The planet has a radius of 0.96+/-0.06 R_Jup and a mean bulk density of 0.9+/-0.2 g/cm^3. The planetary radius resides on the lower envelope for transiting planets with similar mass and irradiation level. This suggests significant enrichment of the planet with heavy elements. We estimate a heavy element mass of 30-40 M_Earth within Kepler-15b.
