A controlled environment experiment was conducted to determine the effect of amending soil with various rates of high-Cu compost (0, 20, 40, and 60% compost/soil by volume) on dill (Anethum graveolens L.) and peppermint (Mentha X piperita L.) yields, on fractionation of Cu and Zn in soils, on elemental composition of soil and tissue, and on the essential oils. The compost contained about 2000 mg kg(-)(1) of Cu. Dill yields were greatest in the 20 or 40% treatments, but peppermint yields were greatest in the 20% treatment. Compost additions increased soil pH and electrical conductivity (EC), HNO(3) extractable soil B, Ca, K, Mg, Mn, P, S, Na, and Pb. Additions of high-Cu compost to soil increased tissue P, S, and Na in both crops and Mn, Mo, and Zn in dill but decreased tissue Ca, Cd, and Fe in both crops and Mn, Mo, and Zn in peppermint, increased Cu in all soil fractions including exchangeable, and increased tissue Cu of dill and peppermint as compared to unamended soil. Addition of 60% of high-Cu compost to soil resulted in 760-780 mg kg(-)(1) Cu in the growth medium. Nevertheless, Cu content in both crops reached only 12 mg kg(-)(1) DW in the 60% compost treatment, which is below the toxicity levels for plants and below the upper chronic dietary exposure for animals. The application of high-Cu compost altered chemical composition of dill and peppermint essential oils, but oils were free of Cu, Zn, Cd, Ni, Cr, and Pb. Results from this study suggest that mature composts with concentrations of Cu and Zn of 2008 and 321 mg/kg, respectively, can be used as a soil conditioner without risk for phytotoxicity or risk of increasing the normal range of Cu and Zn in crop tissue. However, the long-term effect of the accumulation of heavy metals in soils following repeated compost applications needs to be carefully considered.

Application of High-Cu Compost to Dill and Peppermint

Effect of residual distillation water of 15 plants and three plant hormones on Scotch spearmint (Mentha × gracilis Sole)

The effects of feeds containing a blend of essential oil compounds on fattening performance, some blood parameters, the slaughter traits, and internal organ weights of Karya lambs were researched. The lambs were divided into 2 treatment groups: the first group (control, C) consumed mixed feed without blend of essential oil compounds, while the other group (BEOC) consumed mixed feed with blend of essential oil compounds. The mixed feed of BEOC group contained 1 g blend of essential oil compounds per kg. Karya lambs weighed an average of approximately 19.05±1.65 kg and aged 5.5 months. Each lamb was housed in the individual pen and consumed alfalfa hay at 0.2 kg/lamb/day and mixed feed ad libitum . During a period of 56 days, the body weights (BW), body weight gains (BWG), total dry matter intake and feed conversion ratios (FCR) of males and females of BEOC group showed better results, but they were not important statistically (P>0.05). Blood parameters of male and female lambs between group C and group BEOC were similar values, but the values of blood parameters in favour of group BEOC were noticed recovery, numerically. It was determined that only the conformation score and lung weight of female lambs were significant (P<0.05). All the other slaughter traits and internal organs weights were not significantly observed the effect depending on the feeding diet containing a blend of essential oil compounds.

Fattening performance, blood parameters and slaughter traits of Karya lambs consuming blend of essential oil compounds

The present study was conducted to determine the effect of supplementation with oriental herbal medicine residue (OHMR) and methyl sulfonyl methane (MSM) on the growth performance and meat quality of ducks during a 42-day feeding period. In total, 270 Cherry Valley male ducklings were fed diets supplemented with 0.03% MSM alone (MSM group) and with a combination of 0.03% MSM and 0.5% OHMR (MSM–OHMR group). Supplementing the diet with a combination of OHMR and MSM resulted in a significant (P < 0.05) decrease in the mortality rate and serum total cholesterol concentration, and in an increase in the antioxidant enzyme activities of superoxide dismutase and catalase in duck breast muscle (Musculus pectoralis) by 3 and 6 weeks. Moreover, MSM–OHMR as well as MSM alone affected meat quality of ducks by increasing the concentrations of crude protein and sulfur content, and water-holding capacity, and by decreasing percentage moisture loss and thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances during cold storage. Significant differences were detected in concentrations of total unsaturated fatty acids, monounsaturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids, which were significantly (P < 0.05) higher in the MSM–OHMR group. These results suggest that diets containing MSM and OHMR possessing free-radical scavenging activities, such as for 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl and alkyl radicals, may beneficially affect growth performance and meat quality in ducks.

Effects of dietary supplementation of oriental herbal medicine residue and methyl sulfonyl methane on the growth performance and meat quality of ducks

In modern horticultural production attention is paid to creating the best condi- tions for growth and development of plants in order to increase crop yielding. Such task is to be met by, among others, modern organic-mineral fertilizers. In the experiment the ef- fect of Aminoplant, Goemar BM 86 and Goemar Goteo on the growth, development, crop yield and quality of some herbs from Lamiaceae family was estimated. The applied prepa- rations did not significantly affect the height of plants and the number of shoots in tested plants (sweet basil and marjoram) except of peppermint. The content of essential oil in herb of marjoram and peppermint was lower in plants watered with the investigated fertil- izers then in the control and in sweet basil it was clearly lower only in the herb of plants watered with the preparation Goemar Goteo as compared with herb harvested from the control plots and plots watered with Aminoplant and Goemar BM 86. The biggest amount of total polyphenoles was noted in the herb of sweet basil harvested from plots watered with Goemar BM 86 preparation, the least from plots watered with Goemar Goteo. The highest mean content of flavonoid compounds in the green parts of peppermint was char- acteristic for plants from the control plots.
