Synthesis, structural characterization and optical properties of new compounds: Centrosymmetric Ba2GaMQ5 (M=Sb,Bi; Q=Se,Te), Ba2InSbTe5 and noncentrosymmetric Ba2InSbSe5

We report anisotropic magnetocaloric effect and critical behavior in a quasi-one-dimensional ferromagnetic ${\mathrm{CrSbSe}}_{3}$ single crystal. The maximum magnetic entropy change $\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}{S}_{M}^{\mathrm{max}}$ is 2.16 J ${\mathrm{kg}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}{\mathrm{K}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ for the easy $a$ axis (2.03 J ${\mathrm{kg}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}{\mathrm{K}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ for the hard $b$ axis) and the relative cooling power RCP is 163.1 J ${\mathrm{kg}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ for the easy $a$ axis (142.1 J ${\mathrm{kg}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ for the hard $b$ axis) near ${T}_{c}$ with a magnetic field change of 50 kOe. The magnetocrystalline anisotropy constant ${K}_{u}$ is estimated to be 148.5 kJ ${\mathrm{m}}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$ at 10 K, decreasing to 39.4 kJ ${\mathrm{m}}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$ at 70 K. The rescaled $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}{S}_{M}(T,H)$ curves along all three axes collapse onto a universal curve, respectively, confirming the second-order ferromagnetic transition. Further critical behavior analysis around ${T}_{c}\ensuremath{\sim}70\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}\mathrm{K}$ gives that the critical exponents $\ensuremath{\beta}=0.26(1)$, $\ensuremath{\gamma}=1.32(2)$, and $\ensuremath{\delta}=6.17(9)$ for $H\ensuremath{\parallel}a$, while $\ensuremath{\beta}=0.28(2)$, $\ensuremath{\gamma}=1.02(1)$, and $\ensuremath{\delta}=4.14(16)$ for $H\ensuremath{\parallel}b$. The determined critical exponents suggest that the anisotropic magnetic coupling in ${\mathrm{CrSbSe}}_{3}$ is strongly dependent on orientations of the applied magnetic field.

Anisotropic magnetocaloric effect and critical behavior in CrSbSe 3

Single crystals of CrSbSe$_3$, a structurally pseudo-one-dimensional ferromagnetic semiconductor, were grown using a high-temperature solution growth technique and were characterized by x-ray diffraction, anisotropic, temperature- and field-dependent magnetization, temperature-dependent resistivity and optical absorption measurements. A band gap of 0.7 eV was determined from both resistivity and optical measurements. At high temperatures, CrSbSe$_3$ is paramagnetic and isotropic with a Curie-Weiss temperature of $\sim$145 K and an effective moment of $\sim$4.1 $\mu_B$/Cr. A ferromagnetic transition occurs at $T_c$ = 71 K. The $a$-axis, perpendicular to the chains in the structure, is the magnetic easy axis, while the chain axis direction, along $b$, is the hard axis. Magnetic isotherms measured around $T_c$ do not follow the behavior predicted by simple mean field critical exponents for a second order phase transition. A tentative set of critical exponents is estimated based on a modified Arrott plot analysis, giving $\beta\sim$0.25, $\gamma\sim$1.38 and $\delta\sim$6.6.

Room temperature magnetocaloric effect in CrTe1-xSbx alloys

In recent years, low-dimensional ferromagnetic semiconductors have attracted tremendous interest due to their great significance for both fundamental physics and device applications. In this work, a one dimensional (1D) ferromagnetic semiconductor $\mathrm{CrSb}{\mathrm{Se}}_{3}$ with high Curie temperature $({T}_{\mathrm{C}})$ and sizable magnetic anisotropy is proposed based on the first-principle calculations and theoretical model. Quasi-1D chain structure with a moderate cleavage energy of $0.49\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{J}/{\mathrm{m}}^{2}$ suggests the possibility to exfoliate a 1D $\mathrm{CrSb}{\mathrm{Se}}_{3}$ ladder (a ladder structure formed by two rows of 1D monoatomic Cr chain) from the bulk. Monte Carlo simulation based on anisotropic Heisenberg model predicts ${T}_{\mathrm{C}}$ to be up to 170 K, which is much higher than that of the bulk. The high ${T}_{\mathrm{C}}$ of 1D $\mathrm{CrSb}{\mathrm{Se}}_{3}$ ladder originates from the combined effect of the strong intraladder ferromagnetic exchange interaction and large magnetic anisotropy, while the lower ${T}_{\mathrm{C}}$ of the bulk results from the weak interladder indirect exchange interaction. In addition, we find that the splitting of top valence bands depends on the direction of magnetization due to the reduced structural symmetry and spin-orbit coupling, indicating a strong magnetoband structure effect. Our theoretical prediction not only provides a material platform for understanding the fundamental physics of 1D magnetism, but also provides a strategy for the search for the 1D ferromagnetic semiconductor with high Curie temperature.
