Two types of polymer–silica nanocomposites have been prepared by undergoing free radical polymerization of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) either in the presence of HEMA-functionalized SiO2 nanoparticles (Type 1) or during the simultaneous in situ growing of the silica phase through the acid-catalyzed sol–gel polymerization of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) (Type 2). Relationships between synthesis conditions, chemical structure, and resulting morphology have been studied. Type 1 systems exhibit a classical particle-matrix morphology, but where particles tend to form aggregates. Type 2 systems possess a finer morphology characterized by a very open mass-fractal silicate structure, which is believed to be bicontinuous with the organic phase at a molecular level. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Synthesis, structure, and morphology of polymer-silica hybrid nanocomposites based on hydroxyethyl methacrylate

Nucleic acid drugs have great potential to treat many devastating aliments, but their application has been hindered by the lack of efficacious and nontoxic delivery vehicles. Here, a new library of poly(glycoamidoamine)s (D1−D4, G1−G4, and M1−M4) has been synthesized by polycondensation of esterified d-glucaric acid (D), dimethyl-meso-galactarate (G), and d-mannaro-1,4:6,3-dilactone (M) with diethylenetriamine (1), triethylenetetramine (2), tetraethylenepentamine (3), and pentaethylenehexamine (4). The stereochemistry of the carbohydrate hydroxyl groups and the number of amine units have been systematically changed in an effort to examine how the polymer chemistry affects the plasmid DNA (pDNA) binding affinity, the compaction of pDNA into nanoparticles (polyplexes), the material cytotoxicity, and the efficacy of nucleic acid delivery. Extensive attention has been received in recent years for perovskite–polymer composites because of their combination of properties from polymers and perovskites. In this work, a convenient and universal strategy is reported to prepare cesium lead bromide or organolead halide methylammonium bromide polymer composites. This technique integrates the formation of perovskite crystals and the polymer matrix in a one-pot reaction, avoiding the tedious separation and preparation of perovskites. The method is universal for most of the commercially available monomers and polymers, which has been verified in this report using poly(methyl methacrylate), poly(butyl methacrylate), and polystyrene. The physical properties of the varied polymers lead to different luminescent properties and stabilities of the composites.
