The respiration of mammary cancer slices was studied in incubation media of various compositions Both Crabtree and Pasteur effects were observed The respiration rates in homologous serum and in 20 per cent fetal calf serum were similar to that observed in Ringer phosphate solution Glycolytic rates were also comparable in these media The respiration rate changed only slightly with time, but the rate of aerobic glycolysis decreased markedly, and changes in medium pH and glucose concentration could not account for this decrease

The Qo2 values obtained for cancer slices from hormonally unmodified hosts corresponded closely to the Qo2 of mammary gland slices of similar connective tissue content Some cancers from ovariectomized hosts had a decreased Qo2 which could not be accounted for by increased connective tissue content; in the absence of estrogen, cells of these cancers had an intrinsically lower respiration rate
