We demonstrate a narrowband (≈1 nm) LiNbO3 acoustically tunable optical filter with a tuning range adequate to span the 1.3–1.55 μm wavelength range, exploiting the considerable advantages of an unconventional x-cut design.

Integrated-optic acoustically tunable infra-red optical filter

The authors report on new parameters and a new crystal orientation for natural single-phase unidirectional transducers (NSPUDTs). The acoustic wave velocity, electromechanical coupling coefficient, static capacitance, and reflection coefficient due to both electrical and mechanical perturbations are calculated and measured for two NSPUDT orientations. As an application of the results, a filter was developed on a new NSPUDT orientation on LiTaO/sub 3/ wafers. The coupling of modes (COM) model was used as a tool in the analysis and design of the NSPUDT filter. Experimental results are given to verify the NSPUDT parameters and the COM modeling. >

Materials and their influence on performance

A new paradigm in energy-assisted magnetic recording, acoustically assisted magnetic recording (AAMR), is investigated. In this approach, a surface acoustic wave (SAW) is applied to a magnetostrictive recording medium to temporarily lower its coercivity below the write field. Akin to other energy-assisted recording technologies, AAMR provides a strategy to enable writing on high-coercivity media required for thermal stability in high-density disk drives. Using a contact recording tester, it is demonstrated that the write current needed to record data on a galfenol film is reduced in the presence of SAWs. Further, it is shown that standing and focused acoustic waves can, respectively, be used to lower the coercivity in selected regions on the medium.

Acoustically Assisted Magnetic Recording: A New Paradigm in Magnetic Data Storage

V(z) curves obtained by the acoustic line-focus beam are deformed due to multiple leaky waves. A novel velocity measurement method with FFT is developed for a V(z) curve analysis. Experiments are performed for a (111)-Ge sample and two mode spectra are separately measured corresponding to two velocities for a leaky SAW and a leaky pseudo-SAW existing on the boundary of water/sample.

Computations of surface wave velocity and electromechanical power flow angle, and estimates of surface wave coupling to interdigital transducers are given for various orientations of the following surface wave substrate materials: Ba2NaNb5O15, Bi12GeO20, CdS, Diamond, Eu3Fe5O15, Gadolinium Gallium Garnet, GaAs, Germanium, InSb, InAs, PbS, LiNbO3, MgO, Quartz, Rutile, Sapphire, Silicon, Spinel, TeO2, YAG, YGaG, YIG, and ZnO. Particular cuts of interest are then chosen for more detailed numerical calculations of mechanical and electrical parameters governing acoustic wave propagation in crystalline media. Similar data is given for common metals. A list of material constants and a bibliography of 520 surface wave papers are also included. (Author)
