A self-modulated laser wakefield accelerator (SM-LWFA) experiment was performed at the Naval Research Laboratory. Large amplitude plasma wakefields produced by a sub-picosecond, high intensity laser pulse (7×1018 W/cm2) in an underdense plasma (ne≈1019 cm−3) were measured with a pump–probe coherent Thomson scattering (CTS) technique to last for less than 5 ps, consistent with the decay of large amplitude plasma waves due to the modulational instability. A plasma channel was observed to form in the wake of the pump laser pulse, and its evolution was measured with the pump–probe CTS diagnostic. The trailing probe laser pulse was observed to be guided by this channel for about 20 Rayleigh lengths. High energy electrons (up to 30 MeV) have been measured using an electro-magnetic spectrometer, with the energy spectra and divergence of lower energy (up to 4 MeV) electrons obtained using photographic films. Wakefield Generation and Electron Acceleration in a Self-Modulated Laser Wakefield Accelerator Experiment

We present an in-depth analysis of De Laval nozzles, which are ideal for gas jet generation in a wide variety of experiments. Scaling behavior of parameters especially relevant to laser-plasma experiments as jet collimation, sharpness of the jet edges and Mach number of the resulting jet is studied and several scaling laws are given. Special attention is paid to the problem of the generation of microscopic supersonic jets with diameters as small as 150 μm. In this regime, boundary layers dominate the flow formation and have to be included in the analysis.

Supersonic gas jets for laser-plasma experiments.

The propagation of an ultrashort laser pulse can be affected by the light reaching the medium before the pulse. This can cause a serious drawback to possible applications. The propagation in He of an intense 60-fs pulse delivered by a Ti:sapphire laser in the chirped pulse amplification (CPA) mode has been investigated in conditions of interest for laser-plasma acceleration of electrons. The effects of both nanosecond amplified spontaneous emission and picosecond pedestals have been clearly identified. There is evidence that such effects are basically of refractive nature and that they are not detrimental for the propagation of a CPA pulse focused to moderately relativistic intensity. The observations are fully consistent with numerical simulations and can contribute to the search of a stable regime for laser acceleration.

Prepulse effect on intense femtosecond laser pulse propagation in gas

In this work, the formation of clusters in a supersonic jet expansion has been investigated. Clusters of argon, carbon-dioxide, nitrogen, and oxygen have been generated in the gas jet with three different types of nozzles (0.5 mm diameter, 0.8 mm diameter, and a conical nozzle with 0.8 mm diameter aperture). The mean size and density of the clusters have been measured as a function of backing pressure. Here, density of clusters refers to the density of the cluster collection. Rayleigh scattering experimental data and Mach-Zehnder interferometer data have been combined to estimate the average size and density of clusters. CO2 and Ar clusters form easily at about a backing pressure of 2 bars, while N2 and O2 clusters do not form easily. N2 and O2 begin to cluster at a backing pressure of about 18–24 bars. The mean cluster radius of Ar varies from 6.6 A to 24 A and the cluster radius of CO2 varies from about 8.8 A to 35 A as the backing pressure increases from 3 bars to 14 bars. Determining the mean size and density of clusters, formed in super sonic jets, by Rayleigh scattering and Mach-Zehnder interferometer

Characterization measurements of multi-jet gas puff targets, developed for investigations on high-order harmonic generation (HHG) by a focused laser beam in a gas medium of modulated density, are presented. The targets produced by pulsed injection of gas through a nozzle in a form of a chain of small orifices have been characterized by EUV backlighting at 13.5 nm wavelength. Measurements were performed for nozzles with 5, 7 and 9 orifices of 0.5 mm in diameter each. Density profiles for argon targets have been obtained for the first time.

Characterization of multi-jet gas puff targets for high-order harmonic generation using EUV shadowgraphy

We present the characteristics of a high-density pulsed gas jet developed to study the interaction of a short-pulse, high-intensity laser with a large scale underdense plasma. The jet was characterized by laser interferometry. Measurements of density profile were performed for a 5 mm diam cylindrical nozzle and for a 20×1 mm slit. In this latter case, a systematic study of the output density as a function of the backing pressure and of the valve opening duration is presented. At 1 mm from its outlet, the cylindrical nozzle provides densities up to 6.9×1019 cm−3 for an 8 bar backing pressure with a 3 mm full width at half maximum Gaussian-shaped profile. Under the same conditions, the slit produces a 20 mm long flat-top profile with a maximum density of 2.1×1019 cm−3.
