This study examined the impact of fair value accounting on corporate reporting in Nigeria. The primary data used were gathered through a well-structured questionnaire, designed and administered to 120 respondents, who are made up of accountants, auditors, bankers, financial experts and practitioners in Lagos State, Nigeria. We adopted the logistic regression approach in analyzing the research questions. We found that fair value accounting has impact on corporate reporting . The Cox and Snell’s R-Square revealed that 67.1% of the variation in the corporate reporting was explained by the logistic model. We further found a moderate strong relationship between the fair value accounting and corporate reporting. Based on this finding, the study concluded that the used of fair value helped in predicting the earnings and assessment of the amounts, timing and uncertainty of future cash flows in corporate reporting which dependent on its reliability. However, institutional factors played an essential role in enhancing the reliability of discretionary fair value estimates which in return increased the informativeness of accounting information in corporate reporting.

Fair Value Accounting and Corporate Reporting in Nigeria: A Logistics Regression Approach

The purpose of this paper is to study in the French context the impact of the application of fair value on the shareholder value creation by comparing the information’s relevance of accounting indicators of French corporate groups in the industrial sector included in the CAC All-Tradable between pre-fair value period (2001-2003) and the post-fair value (2005-2007). Using the method of logistic regression permits us to demonstrate, firstly, that the variables of traditional character still retain their rank as key indicators determining stock return whatever the accounting principle relating thereto, and we noticed, on the other hand, that there is a marked improvement in information content of variables if and only they were submitted as understandable and uncomplicated under the model of fair value.

IAS 39 has been described as being the most difficult standard to be implemented and understand The main aims of this research were to examine the effect of the implementation of IAS 39 on the investment's decisions of individuals and institutions in Jordan; to evaluate the understanding of IAS 39 by Jordanian investors and the effect of their understanding upon their investment decisions; and to examine the effect of some factors such as the degree of knowledge and the nature (individual or institution) of the investor on the degree of understanding of this IAS because. In the current study, Firstly, the results supported the first hypothesis that the implementation of IAS 39 would affect the reported profits of companies and, consequently, Jordanian investors would decrease their investment in these companies. Secondly, no significant differences were found between different fields of education, different professional certificates, and different years of experience with regards to the understanding of the implementation of IAS 39 and its effect; but, statistical differences were found between different levels of education at the 5% level, and between individual and institutional investors at the 10% level.

The Effect of The Implementation of the IAS 39 on the Jordanian Investors

The European Union's decision of adopting the International Accounting Standards for the whole of its countries members was deeply contested by the European banks. In fact, the banking industry was completely opposed to IAS 39 which treats the financial instruments. In order to demonstrate the impact of different accounting models for financial instruments on the financial statements of banks, we developed a simulation model capturing the most important characteristics of a modern universal bank. It demonstrates that under the current IAS 39, the results of a fully hedged bank may have to show volatility in income statements due to changes in market interest rates. However, results of a partially hedged bank in the same scenario may be less affected.

De plus, nous avons demontre que la magnitude de la reaction des cours boursiers ne depend pas des caracteristiques specifiques des banques etudiees.

This paper studies some fundamental issues concerning the relation between market value of equity and the fair value of financial derivatives determined according to International Accounting Standard No. 39, Financial Instruments: Recognition and Measurement (IAS 39) in non-aktive markets. It is shown that the fair value of a financial derivative is not relevant in a non-active market. It is also demonstrated that in a setting of a non-active market, determining the fair value under the fiction of an active market does not take all available information into account. Additionally, it is noted that the definition of fair value in non-active markets according to IAS 39 has two consequences: (i) The market value of equity at the balance sheet date reflects the company's value in a fictive market situation. (ii) The fair value calculated by one valuation model is in general not unique.
