Research Facilities of IAE NNC RK (Kurchatov) for Investigations of Tritium Interaction with Structural Materials of Fusion Reactors

The TITAN is a new experimental facility for neutron radiography and tomography at the research nuclear reactor WWR-K at the Institute of Nuclear Physics (Almaty, Republic of Kazakhstan). The TITAN facility is located on the radial beamline N o 1 of the nuclear reactor WWR-K. The neutron beam with a maximal field of view of 200 × 200 mm is formed by a collimator system, and the characteristic parameter L/D ratio can be varied in the range 75–1400. The sapphire filter is used to suppress fast neutron radiation. The detector system is based on a scintillator screen with the high-resolution high-sensitive CCD-camera. The design, schematic layout and main technical parameters of the neutron imaging station are presented. The first obtained results of the neutron radiography and tomography experiments with industrial materials and several cultural heritage objects are presented.

New neutron radiography and tomography facility TITAN at the WWR-K reactor

This paper presents the results of experiments on the TITAN facility to assess the quality of neutron imaging. A set of references samples developed by the Paul Scherrer Institute with the support of the IAEA was used. The results obtained demonstrated that the spatial resolution of the facility is 239μm for radiography and 358μm for tomography. The linear attenuation coefficients were determined for six materials. The maximum difference between the experimental values and the theoretical ones was 38%. The difference between the linear attenuation coefficients of neutron radiation from theoretical values is associated with the spectral dependence, due mainly to scattering and beam hardening that leads to deviation of the linear attenuation coefficient from the Beer–Lambert law. Tomography images were demonstrated that individual copper balls larger than 0.8 mm in diameter can be clearly recognized in a vial filled with balls. 

TITAN neutron imaging facility performance

The fast exposition mode for real-time neutron imaging has been developed and tested at the TITAN neutron radiography and tomography facility at the WWR-K research reactor. The parameters of the detector system for fast imaging experiments, as well as several results obtained with this detector system, were presented. 

Fast mode of neutron imaging at the TITAN facility

This work presents a study on the structure of a bronze mirror found in the Akterek burial complex by using neutron radiography and tomography. The manufacturing features and the physical state of this mirror was analyzed by three-dimensional model. It turned out that the rim on the edge was made of a different alloy, and the border between the rim and the base of the mirror is also visually visible. The morphological features and spatial distribution of pores and voids formed during secondary casting with the application of various patterns and ornaments have been studied in detail. The neutron tomography data made it possible to study the remains of a thin layer of corrosion on the surface of the mirror.

At the research reactor WWR-K (Institute of Nuclear Physics, Ministry of Energy, Almaty, Kazakhstan) work on the creation of a new experimental facility for research using neutron radiography and tomography method has begun. It is planned that the facility will form a neutron beam with a cross section of 200 × 200 mm, with a characteristic parameter L/D of 130, using a vacuum collimator system. To obtain neutron radiographic images, a specially designed detector system based on a 6LiF/ZnS scintillation screen and a high-resolution high-sensitivity video camera with a rotated mirror will be used. To protect the video camera from radiation, a two-mirror optical system is proposed. The paper presents a schematic diagram and description of the main components of the experimental setup.
