We have measured the two‐photon autocorrelation function of ultrashort CO2 laser pulses generated by optical free induction decay. The pulse duration was determined as a function of the pressure in the resonant absorber. At a pressure of 250‐Torr 30‐psec optical pulses were produced.

Reviews the nonlinear optical properties of condensed matter. The non-linear optical susceptibilities are first introduced in a phenomenological manner and the effects they describe are presented on general grounds. Then the symmetry aspects of non-linear optics are discussed. The propagation of electromagnetic fields in non-linear media are considered and the device applications they result in are described. Finally, the origins of the non-linear optical behaviour of matter, either in the transparency domain or near energy level resonances are examined.

Non-linear optical properties of condensed matter

We present absolute measurements of two-photon absorption (TPA) coefficients of ADP and KD*P at 266.1 nm. Values of \beta = 11 \pm 3 \times 10^{-11} cm/W for ADP and 2.7 \pm 0.7 \times 10^{-11} cm/W for KD*P were determined. The effect of the pulse profile in space and time on the numerical value of β is discussed. The limitation which this degree of nonlinear absorption places on second harmonic conversion from 532 nm is investigated.

This chapter contains the main reference material, namely, optical and nonlinear optical properties of 77 crystals which are used in applied nonlinear optics for frequency conversion of laser light. All nonlinear optical crystals described in this chapter are divided into four groups: basic, frequently used, other inorganic, and other organic. The properties of crystalline quartz which is not phase-matchable but nevertheless is often used as a standard in the d-tensor coefficients’ measurements are given in a separate section. Inside every group of crystals an ordering of crystals according to the wavelength of the short-wave absorption edge was done.

Properties of Nonlinear Optical Crystals

The effect of the free carriers generated by two-photon absorption in tellurium has been studied by using a CO 2 and a CO laser. Time and power dependence of the induced absorption has been measured, as well as the variation of the two-photon process with the wavelength of the CO laser. These observations confirm the assumptions of the analysis described in Part I.

Influence of two-photon absorption on second-harmonic generation in semiconductors - Part II: Measurement of two-photon absorption in tellurium

The competition between two-photon absorption and second-harmonic generation (SHG) in semiconductors is analyzed; particular attention is given to the linear absorption and change of phase-matching conditions caused by the two-photon induced free carriers. The system of equations is solved numerically in the case of tellurium, and this analysis enables prediction of an improvement of harmonic conversion efficiency when using shorter pulses.
