Numerous non-ionic thermally responsive homopolymers phase separate from their aqueous solutions upon heating. Far fewer neutral homopolymers are known to phase separate upon cooling. A systematic compilation of the polymers reported to exhibit thermoresponsive behaviour is presented in this review, includ- ing N-substituted poly((meth)acrylamide)s, poly(N-vinylamide)s, poly(oxazoline)s, protein-related polymers, poly(ether)s, polymers based on amphiphilic balance, and elastin-like synthetic polymers. Basic properties of aqueous solutions of these poly- mers are briefly described.

The compactization of a single DNA molecule in polyethylene glycol (PEG) solution was investigated both theoretically and experimentally. A theory is proposed taking into account the polyelectrolyte effect and redistribution of PEG within DNA coils. This approach makes it possible to describe the dependence of critical value, c, of PEG concentration at the point of DNA collapse on the degree of PEG polymerization, P, and on the concentration of low‐molecular salt, ns. Observation of single DNA molecule in solution of PEG has been carried out by means of fluorescence microscopy which allows one to observe the conformation of individual DNA directly. Direct evidence that the coil–globule transition of DNA occurs as first order phase transition was obtained. The determination of the properties of aqueous salt solutions of poly(ethylene oxide) has been extended to cloud-point and θ-temperature measurements in sodium acetate, potassium fluoride, sodium thiosulfate, and potassium phosphate The Hofmeister series for the decreasing effect of anion species in salting out the polymer is accordingly extended However, the order of the effect depends on whether it is made on the basis of molar anion concentration the molar concentration of unit anion charge, or the ionic strength Viscosity measurements on θ and non-θ solutions containing zinc sulfate, potassium fluoride, and potassium phosphate gave polymer dimensions (in addition to limiting viscosity numbers etc), and characteristic ratios in good agreement with theoretical predictions (Abe and Mark), and enthalpy and entropy parameters χH and χs; the latter values, nominally −014 and 063, are identical at 298 K for the three salt species
