Contributions by urban planners, sociologists, anthropologists, architects, and landscape architects on the role and scope of urban design in creating more just and inclusive cities. Scholars who write about justice and the city rarely consider the practices and processes of urban design, while discourses on urban design often neglect concerns about justice. The editors of Just Urban Design take the position that urban design interventions have direct and important implications for justice in the city. The contributions in this volume contextualize the state of knowledge about urban design for justice, stress inclusivity as the key to justice in the city, affirm community participation and organizing as cornerstones of greater equity, and assert that a just urban design must center and privilege our most marginalized individuals and communities. Service providers’ perspectives on, and responses to the health and social impacts of gentrification have been underexplored. This study’s objectives were to assess health and social service providers’ perspectives on the causes and impacts of gentrification and their responses to gentrification’s impacts. Qualitative in-depth interviews were conducted with 15 service providers sampled using maximum variation and snowball sampling, in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A. Inductive thematic analysis was used. Providers characterized gentrification as increases in community-level social and economic advantage and displacement of Black and Brown people. Neighborhood divestment and speculative development were reported determinants of gentrification. Revitalization and economic growth were reported positive effects of gentrification; negative ramifications included inflated housing costs, residential displacement, and reduced access to health and social services. Providers enacted multiple solutions to mitigate the negative consequences they observed, including educating residents on housing rights and collaborating with other organizations to expand outreach to displaced residents. Service providers are integral to contributing to knowledge on the causes and impacts of gentrification, and absolving problems resulting from gentrification. Additional research documenting service provider’s responses to the impacts of gentrification are needed to inform how future community development strategies are developed to create more benefits than harms.

Abstract We must have a comprehensive grasp of urban church closings before embarking on repurposing interventions, as illustrated in the previous chapter. We need an in-depth knowledge foundation and concrete examples of these special buildings because of their complexities and symbolism in society. Capturing the extent of destruction of a moving tornado is certainly challenging, but that is what this book is trying to achieve. Grasping this urban environmental movement cannot be done in isolation from other ecological facets of the topic operative within and outside the United States, or from just a Snapchat moment in time. This chapter offers a multifaceted view of church closure trends and the major social forces shaping them, highlighting its broad national reach and implications for congregations and their communities. Church closures reshape major segments of the religious community and cities in the process. They leave remnants of a bygone era when religion reigned supreme and its buildings served as testimony of their power and influence locally and nationally, as in the case of the civil rights movement, for instance. 

Social Forces Shaping Church Closing Trends

Gentrification and subsequent displacement are common problems in cities, and result in the removal of poor communities and communities of color from urban areas as they move to cheaper locations in the metropolitan region. Here we describe a community-based approach to redevelopment by historic Black churches that seeks to counter such displacement and cultural removal. We explain the history of a historically Black neighborhood in Seattle and the founding and rationale for a church-led project called the Nehemiah Initiative. Our perspective is that of participants in the work of the Nehemiah Initiative and as faculty and students from a local university partner supporting it. We conclude with policy strategies that can be used to support such redevelopment in Seattle, with understanding that some may be broadly applicable to other cities.
