This paper presents a novel strategy for online parameter estimation in a hybrid active power filter (HAPF). This HAPF makes use of existing capacitor banks which it combines with an active power filter (APF) in order to dynamically compensate reactive power. The equipment is controlled with finite control set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) due to its already well-known fast dynamic response. The HAPF model is similar to a grid-connected LCL-filtered converter, so the direct control of the HAPF current can cause resonances and instabilities. To solve this, indirect control, using the capacitor voltage and the inverter-side current, is applied in the cost function, which creates high dependency between the system parameters and the equipment capability to compensate the load reactive power. This dependency is evaluated by simulations, in which the capacitor bank reactance is shown to be the most sensitive parameter, and, thus, responsible for inaccuracies in the FCS-MPC references. In order to minimize this problem without increasing the complexity of the FCS-MPC algorithm, an estimation technique, based on adaptive notch filters, is proposed. The proposed algorithm is tested in a laboratory prototype to demonstrate its ability to follow variations in the HAPF capacitor reactance, effectively correcting the reactive power reference and providing dynamic reactive power compensation. During the tests, the proposed algorithm was capable of keeping the supplied reactive power within a 1% error, even in a situation with 33% variation in the HAPF capacitor reactance.

Online Adaptive Parameter Estimation of a Finite Control Set Model Predictive Controlled Hybrid Active Power Filter

Model predictive control has been considered as a powerful alternative control method in power converters and electrical drives recently. This paper proposes a novel method for finite control set predictive control algorithm foran induction motor fed by 11-level cascaded H-Bridge converter. To deal with the high computation volume of MPC algorithm applied for CHBconverter, 7-adjacent vectors method is applied for calculating the desired voltage vector which minimizes the cost function. Moreover, by utilizingfield programmable gate array (FPGA) platform with its flexible structure,the total execution time reduces considerably so that the selected voltage vector can be applied immediately without delay compensation. This method improves the dynamic responses and steady-state performance of the system. Finally, experimental results verify the effectiveness of control design

A finite set-model predictive control based on FPGA flatform for eleven-level cascaded H-Bridge inverter fed induction motor drive

Abstract This paper concentrates on an algorithm with model predictive control for current and distributed MPPT for cascaded H-bridge multilevel photovoltaic (PV) inverter applications. In conventional method, in each sampling period, a discrete-time model is employed to predict the current future values for all vectors of voltage. The voltage vector will be approved if it minimizes the cost function. Because multilevel inverter has so many available voltage vectors, there is a large quantity of calculations, hence it makes difficult in implementing the normal control method. A varied control strategy that extensively decreases the calculations volume and eliminating common-mode voltage is proposed. To raise the PV modules performance and enlarge the systems power, a distributed maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control scheme for each phase of multilevel inverter is offered, that allows its DC-link voltage to be regulated separately. The recommended approach is double-checked by using a model simulated in MATLAB-Simulink software.

Model predictive control for distributed MPPT algorithm of cascaded H-bridge multilevel grid-connected PV inverters

This paper introduces a STATCOM based on the asymmetric cross switch (A-CS) multilevel inverter for the first time. Owing to its asymmetric topology, A-CS generates higher number of voltage levels using the same number of power components and total standing voltage (TSV) compared to symmetric topologies such as the cascaded H-bridge (CHB). Also, it features a high scalability to achieve higher voltage levels. The main goal in the A-CS based STATCOM is to control the voltages of several capacitors in different values in addition to the reactive current control. This paper presents a finite control set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) to achieve this goal. Taking the advantage of three multi-objective cost functions, the control goals are met while the computation burden of the controller is reduced. To confirm the proper operation of A-CS based STATCOM, several simulation results are provided in MATLAB/SIMULINK on a 13-level three-phase 3.3 KV, 400 kVAr A-CS based STATCOM.

Finite Control Set Model Predictive Control for Asymmetric Cross-Switched Multilevel Inverter Based STATCOM

Abstract Multilevel three-phase inverters are increasingly popular due to their ability to generate high-quality output voltage with harmonic distortion lower than traditional inverters. They are used in various applications, including grid-connected renewable energy systems, motor drives, and power transmission systems, to improve efficiency and reduce costs. The control quality of grid-connected multilevel inverters depends on various factors such as the modulation technique, switching frequency, and control strategy. A good control system can achieve a balance between output current harmonics and switching losses, improving the efficiency and performance of the inverter. This paper suggests a technique for reducing current harmonics of grid-connected multilevel three-phase inverters using variable frequency carriers, without any corresponding increase of the number of switching commutations. The effectiveness of the suggested method has been confirmed through simulation results, which were compared to those obtained from the method of phase opposite disposition modulation using fixed frequency carriers.
