Innovative Strategies in Design of Transition Metal-based Catalysts for Large-current-density Alkaline Water/Seawater Electrolysis

The rational electrode design is one of the most important ways to enhance the electrochemical properties of lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs). In this contribution, we use Ni-embedded porous graphitic carbon fiber (PGCF@Ni) as the scaffold to construct a novel cathode and anode for LSBs. With the help of elaborate surface engineering, the constructed solid electrolyte interface (SEI)@Li/PGCF@Ni anodes can effectively restrain the growth of lithium dendrites during the cycle, exhibiting an ultralow overpotential of ∼10 mV for 2000 h at 1 mA cm-2/1 mA h cm-2. The underlying mechanism is further investigated by COMSOL Multiphysics simulations. Additionally, the PGCF@Ni/S cathode fabricated by the molten sulfurizing method manifests superior rate performance and stability. Ultimately, the assembled SEI@Li/PGCF@Ni||PGCF@Ni/S full battery exhibits prominent electrochemical property with a high capacity retention of about 77.9% after 600 cycles at 1 C. Such success at the performance improvement in LSBs may open up avenues toward other rational designs of high-quality electrodes in electrochemical energy storage.

A critical review on graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4)-based composites for environmental remediation

Seawater is one of the most abundant and clean hydrogen atom resources on our planet, so hydrogen production from seawater splitting has notable advantages. Direct electrolysis of seawater would not be in competition with growing demands for pure water. Using green electricity generated from renewable sources (e.g., solar, tidal, and wind energies), the direct electrolytic splitting of seawater into hydrogen and oxygen is a potentially attractive technology under the framework of carbon-neutral energy production. High selectivity and efficiency, as well as stable electrocatalysts, are prerequisites to facilitate the practical applications of seawater splitting. Even though the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is thermodynamically favorable, the most desirable reaction process, the four-electron reaction, exhibits a high energy barrier. Furthermore, due to the presence of a high concentration of chloride ions (Cl−) in seawater, chlorine evolution reactions involving two electrons are more competitive. Therefore, intensive research efforts have been devoted to optimizing the design and construction of highly efficient and anticorrosive OER electrocatalysts. Based on this, in this review, we summarize the progress of recent research in advanced electrocatalysts for seawater splitting, with an emphasis on their remarkable OER selectivity and distinguished anti-chlorine corrosion performance, including the recent progress in seawater OER electrocatalysts with their corresponding optimized strategies. The future perspectives for the development of seawater-splitting electrocatalysts are also demonstrated.

The invention relates to a manufacturing method of a dye-sensitized solar cell with a high open-circuit voltage. The method comprises the following steps of 1) preparing a photo-anode film; and printing titanium dioxide on conductive glass FTO by a silk-screen printing method, and calcining to obtain a titanium dioxide photo-anode; 2) processing the photo-anode film: soaking the photo-anode film in a benzimidazole solution taking acetonitrile as a solvent; and taking out the photo-anode film, and drying the photo-anode film; and 3) assembling a battery: immersing the fully dried photo-anode film into an N719 dye for sensitization; and assembling the photo-anode film with a Pt counter electrode and a polyethylene diaphragm to form a dye-sensitized solar cell with an open sandwich structure,and injecting an electrolyte which takes the acetonitrile as a solvent and contains DMPI, I2, LiI and TBP into a cavity between the photo-anode and the counter electrode to obtain the dye-sensitizedsolar cell with the high open-circuit voltage. The method is beneficial to improving the open-circuit voltage of the dye-sensitized solar cell.
