Removal of alkali and transition metal ions from water with hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents.
Dannie J. G. P. van Osch,Dries Parmentier,Chjt Carin Dietz,Adriaan van den Bruinhorst,Remco Tuinier,Maaike C. Kroon,Maaike C. Kroon +6 more
TL;DR: Hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents were used for the first time for the removal of metal ions from non-buffered water and it was shown that the extraction occurs via an ion exchange mechanism in which all transition metal ions could be extracted with high distribution coefficients, even for high Co2+ concentrations and low DES/water mass ratios.

Tetraalkylammonium oleate and linoleate based ionic liquids: promising extractants for metal salts
TL;DR: In this article, a new class of ionic liquids (ILs) with unsaturated fatty acids as anions (oleate and linoleate) is proposed for metal removal from aqueous phases.

Continuous process for selective metal extraction with an ionic liquid
Dries Parmentier,Sarah Paradis,Sybrand J. Metz,Susanne K. Wiedmer,Maaike C. Kroon,Maaike C. Kroon +5 more
TL;DR: In this article, a continuous process for selective metal extraction with an ionic liquid (IL) at room temperature was described for the first time, where the hydrophobic fatty acid based IL tetraoctylphosphonium oleate ([P8888][oleate]) was specifically chosen for its low viscosity and high selectivity towards transition metals.
A new reactor design for harvesting algae through electrocoagulation-flotation in a continuous mode
Dries Parmentier,Dave Manhaeghe,Luca Baccini,Rik Van Meirhaeghe,Diederik P.L. Rousseau,Stijn Van Hulle +5 more
TL;DR: In this article, a new electrocoagulation-flotation set-up with a tubular coaxial reactor, developed by Noah Water Solutions, is investigated for the autonomous harvesting of the green microalgae species Chlorella vulgaris.

A mechanism for solvent extraction of first row transition metals from chloride media with the ionic liquid tetraoctylammonium oleate
Dries Parmentier,Tom Vander Hoogerstraete,Dipanjan Banerjee,Yash A. Valia,Sybrand J. Metz,Koen Binnemans,Maaike C. Kroon,Maaike C. Kroon +7 more
TL;DR: The experimental data showed that Co(ii) and Ni (ii) were extracted in the pH range from 6 to 8 by the formation of negatively charged metal carboxylate complexes with tetraalkylammonium counter ions, while Zn(ii).
