Pal'Shin,Jay Cummings,Valerie Connaughton,Kazutaka Yamaoka,Arne Rau,William V. Boynton,I. G. Mitrofanov,John O. Goldsten +32 more
TL;DR: In this article, a broad-line type-Ic supernova (SN), PTF 10bzf (SN 2010ah), was detected by the Palomar Transient Factory (PTF) on 2010 February 23.
Semi-supervised learning for photometric supernova classification★
Joseph W. Richards,Darren Homrighausen,Peter E. Freeman,Chad M. Schafer,Dovi Poznanski,Dovi Poznanski +5 more
TL;DR: In this article, a semi-supervised method for photometric supernova typing was proposed, which used the nonlinear dimension reduction technique diffusion map to detect structure in a data base of supernova light curves and subsequently employed random forest classification on a spectroscopically confirmed training set to learn a model that can predict the type of each newly observed supernova.
Detecting outliers and learning complex structures with large spectroscopic surveys - a case study with APOGEE stars
TL;DR: This work applies and expands on a recently introduced outlier detection algorithm that is based on an unsupervised random forest, and uses the algorithm to calculate a similarity measure for stellar spectra from the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment, showing that the similarity measure traces non-trivial physical properties and contains information about complex structures in the data.
Core-collapse Supernovae from the Palomar Transient Factory: Indications for a Different Population in Dwarf Galaxies

Blake,Jeff Cooke,Richard Dekany,Gustavo Rahmer,David Hale,Roger M. H. Smith,Jeff Zolkower,Viswa Velur,Richard Walters,John Henning,K. Bui,D. McKenna,Janet Jacobsen +32 more
TL;DR: In this article, the first compilation of 72 core-collapse supernovae from the Palomar Transient Factory (PTF) was used to study their observed subtype distribution in dwarf galaxies compared to giant galaxies.
An emerging coherent picture of red supergiant supernova explosions
TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that the energy deposited in the ejecta by the exploding core is approximately proportional to the progenitor mass cubed in a core collapse supernova.
