Biofuels productions from microalgae received wide attention recently and have high potential to replace fossil fuels. This paper served as a platform to critically review current production technologies of microalgae, ranging from cultivation, harvesting, extraction and several biofuels conversion processes. In addition, due to the high photosynthetic efficiency of microalgae, mass cultivation of microalgae is believed to be able to efficiently reduce the carbon dioxide emission to atmosphere and thus, reducing the impact of global warming. This is because microalgae have high growth rate and is able to develop maximum of 70% of lipid content within their cells depending on species. Apart from that, microalgae have the ability to survive under harsh condition and occupied smaller cultivation land area than other land crops. The harvested microalgae biomass can be used for electrical generation, while its crude lipid can be used as transportation fuel as it has 80% average energy content of petroleum. In the present paper, a detailed discussion to produce biodiesel, fuel gas, bio-oil, methane, hydrogen and alcohol from microalgae biomass are also included. Besides, updated research, challenges and the way forward of microalgae biofuels are also presented. In future, biofuels production from microalgae can be economical viable at some scale, which is then profitable in terms of economics and also environment.

Microalgae biofuels as an alternative to fossil fuel for power generation

Renewable energy sources e.g. biofuels, are the focus of this century. Economically and environmental friendly production of such energies are the challenges that limit their usages. Microalgae is one of the most promising renewable feedstocks. However, economical production of microalgae lipid in large scales is conditioned by increasing the lipid content of potential strains without losing their growth rate or by enhancing both simultaneously. Major effort and advances in this area can be made through the environmental stresses. However, such stresses not only affect the lipid content and species growth (biomass productivity) but also lipid composition. This study provides a comprehensive review on lipid enhancement strategies through environmental stresses and the synergistic or antagonistic effects of those parameters on biomass productivity and the lipid composition. This study contains two main parts. In the first part, the cellular structure, taxonomic groups, lipid accumulation and lipid compositions of the most potential species for lipid production are investigated. In the second part, the effects of nitrogen deprivation, phosphorus deprivation, salinity stress, carbon source, metal ions, pH, temperature as the most important and applicable environmental parameters on lipid content, biomass productivity/growth rate and lipid composition are investigated.

Microalgae lipid and biomass for biofuel production: A comprehensive review on lipid enhancement strategies and their effects on fatty acid composition

The interest in algae based biofuels and chemicals has increased over the past few years because of their potential to reduce the dependence on petroleum-based fuels and chemicals. Algae is touted to be the most suitable and sustainable feedstock for producing green energy as the whole process is carbon—neutral in nature and can also be utilized for environment cleaning applications. This review article mainly focuses on how algae can be used as an efficient and economically viable biorefinery feedstock. An effective biorefinery using algae can only be constructed through its integration with other industries. To make sense of the algal biorefinery concept, there is a need to establish a proper connection between the various input and output streams of the products, as well as the services to be provided by the participating industries. Also highlighted in this article, is the entire spectrum of energy and non energy products that can be obtained using algal biomass as the raw material.

Selection of chemical markers is crucial for the quality control of herbal medicines, including authentication of genuine species, harvesting the best quality raw materials, evaluation of post-harvesting handling, assessment of intermediates and finished products, and detection of harmful or toxic ingredients. Ideal chemical markers should be the therapeutic components of herbal medicines. However, for most herbal medicines, the therapeutic components have not been fully elucidated or easily monitored. Bioactive, characteristic, main, synergistic, correlative, toxic and general components may be selected. This article reviews the effective use of chemical markers in the quality control of herbal medicines including the selection criteria considering the roles and physicochemical factors which may affect the effective use of chemical markers.

Chemical markers for the quality control of herbal medicines: an overview

In this paper geometrical representations for multicriteria decision problems are proposed. This new approach provides assistance to understand the conflictual aspects of the criteria and to tackle the problem of the weights associated to them. A generalized criterion, including a preference function, is first generated for each criterion. This allows to define unicriterion preference flows for which a geometrical representation can be obtained by using the Principal Components Analysis. The actions are represented by points and criteria by axes in the PCA plane. A decision axis taking into account the weights associated to the criteria can be defined. This technique provides the decision-maker with a considerable enrichment for the understanding of his problem: clusters of actions can be considered, the importance of the criteria can be evaluated, conflictual criteria are immediately detected, incomparability between actions is emphasized and explained, best compromise actions are easily selected, new decision-axes representing possible clusters of criteria can be considered, undesirable actions can be eliminated, … The technique consists in a powerful new qualitative decision tool. It is illustrated in the paper on some examples treated by the Promethee I and II methods. A didactic and user-friendly microcomputer code is available.

Influence of fatty acid structure on fuel properties of algae derived biodiesel

Thirty-one commercial valerian preparations available in Australia, including teas, tablets, capsules and liquids, were analysed by HPLC for valepotriates, valerenic acid and valerenic acid derivatives. The concentration of valerenic acid and its derivatives ranged from < 0.01 to 6.32 mg/g of product. Powder capsules, on average, contained the highest concentration of valerenic acids (2.46 mg/g) and liquids the lowest concentration (0.47 mg/ml). The mean concentration of valerenic acid in the five products standardized against valerenic acid (3.56 mg/g) was significantly higher than in the 26 non-standardized products (0.89 mg/g). There was a significant relationship between valerenic acids content and added valerian root for the standardized products but not for the non-standardised products. Valepotriates were found at low levels (< 1.0 mg/g) in some teas but were not detected in any of the finished products.

Impact of Triacetin as an oxygenated fuel additive to waste cooking biodiesel: transient engine performance and exhaust emissions

Physical and chemical properties of biofuels vary among various feedstocks and their subsequent conversions to fuels. The biofuels contain various amounts of oxygen, and this has a significant influence on exhaust emission. This oxygen content has been considered in order to investigate its effect on diesel engine exhaust emissions. The experiments have been conducted with a heavy duty diesel engine and various oxygenated fuels. It is found that the amount of oxygen in the fuel has a high level of influence on its exhaust emissions, and this provides agreement with diesel emissions results such as PN reduction. By increasing the amount of oxygen in the blend (by adding more biofuel), the particulate number (PN) is reduced and NOx increases gradually. However, the variation of PN and NOx are not similar for waste cooking biodiesel (WCBD) and butanol blend, even though their oxygen content are the same in the blends. This is due to the source of the biofuel and their internal chemistry.
