Many aquatic species of management interest, such as endangered, sport, or commercially valuable fish, move extensively within a hydrosystem as they use different habitats for spawning, rearing, feeding, and refuge. Engineering tools are presently inadequate to simulate movement by such species as part of water resources planning and management. We describe how fixed grid-cell methods can be coupled with mobile object-oriented modeling methods (called Eulerian-Lagrangian methods) to realistically simulate movement behavior of fish in the complex hydraulic and water quality fields of aquatic ecosystems. In the coupled system, the Lagrangian framework is used to simulate the movement of symbolic fish (that is, an individual fish, schools of fish, or some aggregate of the population), and the Eulerian framework is used to simulate the physicochemical regimes that influence fish movement behavior. The resulting coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian hybrid modeling method is based on a particle-tracking algorithm supplemented with stimuli-response rules, that is, the numerical fish surrogate.

Robust ecosystem analysis of water resource systems remains elusive. A principle reason is the difficulty in linking engineering models used to simulate physicochemical processes associated with project design or operation with biological models used to simulate biological population attributes. A retrospective shows that each modeling tradition can be generally assigned (with exceptions) into either an Eulerian or Lagrangian reference framework. Eulerian and Lagrangian reference frameworks can be coupled to create a new synthesis, the Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian Hybrid Ecological Modeling Concept (CEL Hybrid Concept), capable of simulating different ecosystem processes that range widely in spatial and temporal scale. The foundation of the CEL Hybrid Concept is the coupler, a collection of algorithms based on conservation principles that transform and conserve data in a way that allows the two frameworks to share a common information base. The coupling algorithm allows the simulation to aggregate, disaggregate, and translate information, as required by each framework, so that processes that differ substantially in scale can each be adequately simulated. The coupled system is illustrated by linking a fish swim path selection model with a hydrodynamic and water quality model.

Coupling of Engineering and Biological Models for Ecosystem Analysis

A three-dimensional particle tracking methodology for the New York Bight has been developed. Specific features included in the particle tracking model are surface transport of floatables by the wind and three-dimensional advection and diffusion of suspended and dissolved matter. The particle tracking model is run in conjunction with the Coastal Engineering Research Center's three-dimensional hydrodynamic model CH3D. The particle tracking model can be run in concert with CH3D as a series of subroutines or can be run in a stand-alone mode utilizing processed CH3D hydrodynamics. Interactive window-based software has been developed to assist in the setup and execution of the stand-alone particle tracking model.
