Workforce planning and education: mapping competencies, skills and standards in mental health.

The integration of Worcestershire community services with the mental health trust brings with it many opportunities for developing services, with tissue viability being one of them. Mental health trusts have limited access to wound care specialists, frequently relying on Registered Mental Health Nurses who have a limited knowledge in tissue viability to deliver wound care to this client group. To obtain baseline information an audit was undertaken across Worcestershire mental health services. The aims of the audit were to review current wound care practice including the delivery of all clinical care provided, preventative tissue viability approaches and the current knowledge and skills of the staff. The audit results indicated a lack of tissue viability knowledge and skill, and that the tissue viability service needs to deliver and prioritize education to mental health staff and measure the clinical and financial outomes.

Research has shown that people with long-term mental health difficulties often suffer poor general health and are at risk of premature death. An audit in primary care showed that these patients had low rates of access to physical health screening and health promotion. Practices worked with colleagues in the community mental health team to encourage patients to attend for an annual check with a practice nurse. Outcomes are sent to the mental health team so that they can promote concordance with follow-up tests or treatment. Attendance rates have been high and unmet need has been revealed. Practice nurses and mental health staff are developing a better understanding of each others' roles.
