Narrowband-Internet of Things (NB-IoT) is a standard-based low-power wide-area network (LPWAN) technology developed to connect a wide range of new IoT devices and services. The NB-IoT will improve the power consumption of user devices, system capacity, and spectrum efficiency. It is able to be loaded by major mobile equipment and module manufacturers, and indeed it will be existing to be adaptable with any cellular mobile network’s generations. It also benefits from all the security and privacy features of mobile networks. In this chapter, fundamental key aspects of NB-IoT are investigated and the features of NB-IoT and technical properties are proposed in addition to the theoretical concepts. A detailed overview of the current NB-IoT-related technologies such as Long-Term Evolution for Machines (LTE-M), Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), enhanced Machine Type Communication (eMTC) and ultralow power technologies is discussed. This chapter will also provide details of different applications related to NB-IoT such as smart grid, smart cities, and smart industry. Security issues and other deployment considerations will be explored.

NB-IoT: concepts, applications, and deployment challenges

The high bandwidth and low latency of 5th generation mobile networks (5G communication) play an important role in the construction of Ubiquitous Power Internet of Things (UPIoT）, and provide strong protection for the goal of universal interconnection and human-computer interaction. This paper studies the application of 5G communication technology in UPIoT, summarizes the mainstream IoT communication technology at home and abroad, deeply analyzes the characteristics of UPIoT and the demand for communication services, and introduces the principle of 5G communication technology and Features. The three major application scenarios of 5G and the possible power business of each scenario are studied. Finally, from the aspects of universal interconnection, precision control, real-time measurement, broadband communication and efficient computing, the application prospect of 5G communication technology in UPIoT is studied. 5G communication technology has broad application prospects in UPIoT, and has important engineering application value.This work was supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (61933005); Science and Technology Project of State Grid Jiangsu Electric Power Consulting Co., Ltd. Application of 5G Communication Technology in Ubiquitous Power Internet of Things

With the recent standardization of Narrow-Band Internet of Things (NB-IoT) as a category of Low Power Wide Area (LPWA) technology by the 3GPP, the endless possibilities it brings for IoT development cannot be overemphasized. Nigeria as a developing nation, has continued to struggle in the development and deployment of Internet of Things (IoT) technology. The approach of this paper is basically to critically analyze the current state and the technological deficiencies of IoT development in Sub-Saharan Africa by using Nigeria as a case study, and to show how the emergence of NB-IoT can help to significantly improve the penetration and optimal development of this relatively modern technology in Nigeria and consequently in Africa, as it is in developed nations. Relevant features of NB-IoT are enumerated, we propose possible NB-IoT use cases that are suitable for the Nigerian eco-system and finally, we give a summarized developmental plan for the mobile network operators (MNOs) in Nigeria.

Analysis of communication reliability in NarrowBand-IoT oriented wireless sensor networks

Internet of Things is a term used to describe a world, in which all disparate objects and devices have ability to address, control, and share information. The technology brings a lot of convenience to human life and consequently introduce a new level of threats, which can simultaneously attack a wide range of facilities and stop providing services. Therefore, investigating, analyzing and securing the types of channels in this growing technology and improving their communication efficiency is of particular importance. In this paper, while categorizing the types of important channels in IoT technology, we provide a solution to improve communication efficiency of each of them. Then, we simulate and analyze the effects of our suggestions for indoor and outdoor applications of IoT.

IoT Performance Improving for Indoor and Outdoor Environments

Narrow Band (NB) Internet of Things (IoT) technology enables integration of low power devices into future Internet of Things. In this paper, both the intended technology benefits and the available solutions for IoT connectivity are analyzed in order to fully utilize the NB-IoT potential. Although existing connectivity solutions support reliable communication, they have to be adapted or upgraded in order to fulfill the requirements of IoT end-devices in the aspect of energy efficient two-way end-to-end communication. The basic remote sensing application using NB-IoT connectivity is presented in the form of the case study to support such claim.
