After all, the outpouring of volunteerism, solidarity, patriotism, and self-sacrifice displayed by Americans in the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks appears to fly in the face of Putnam's central argument: that \"social capital\" -defined as \"social networks and the norms of reciprocity and trustworthiness that arise from them\" (p. 19)'has declined to dangerously low levels in America over the last three decades. However, Putnam is not fazed in the least by the recent effusion of solidarity. Quite the contrary, he sees in it the potential to \"reverse what has been a 30to 40-year steady decline in most measures of connectedness or community.\"' As an example of how the current \"war on terrorism\" could generate a durable civic renewal, Putnam points to the burst in civic practices that occurred during and after World War II, which he says \"permanently marked\" the generation that lived through it and had a \"terrific effect on American public life over the last half-century.\" 3 If Americans can follow this example and channel their current civic

Bowling alone: The collapse and revival of American community

The mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) coordinates eukaryotic cell growth and metabolism with environmental inputs, including nutrients and growth factors. Extensive research over the past two decades has established a central role for mTOR in regulating many fundamental cell processes, from protein synthesis to autophagy, and deregulated mTOR signaling is implicated in the progression of cancer and diabetes, as well as the aging process. Here, we review recent advances in our understanding of mTOR function, regulation, and importance in mammalian physiology. We also highlight how the mTOR signaling network contributes to human disease and discuss the current and future prospects for therapeutically targeting mTOR in the clinic.

mTOR Signaling in Growth, Metabolism, and Disease

The compelling demand for higher performance and lower power consumption in electronic systems is the main driving force of the electronics industry's quest for devices and/or architectures based on new materials. Here, we provide a review of electronic devices based on two-dimensional materials, outlining their potential as a technological option beyond scaled complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor switches. We focus on the performance limits and advantages of these materials and associated technologies, when exploited for both digital and analog applications, focusing on the main figures of merit needed to meet industry requirements. We also discuss the use of two-dimensional materials as an enabling factor for flexible electronics and provide our perspectives on future developments.

Electronics based on two-dimensional materials

The aim of this study was to compare the suture tension and the extent of distortion according to the continuous and interrupted suture methods. An in vitro eyelid model of 10-cm length and 5 layers was made with a 3-layer skin pad for the skin, muscle, and aponeurosis and silicone sheet and sponge for the tarsal plate and conjunctiva. The thickness of the model was 11.8 mm. All interrupted sutures were used in Khoo's method, the buried method, and Mikamo's method, and a continuous suture was applied in the 2-loop en bloc method, the subconjunctival buried method, and Maruo's method. The thickness of the eyelid was measured with a custom-made micrometer that had tacks attached on a measuring bar. The tension was measured with a force-gauge. The distortion in the interrupted suture methods was 15.2% ± 3.4% of the original thickness, and it was significantly greater than the 3.3% ± 2.8% of the original thickness in the continuous suture methods (P = 0.000, t- test). In the interrupted suture methods, Khoo's method showed the greatest rate of distortion (16.9% ± 4.5%), and this was followed by Mikamo's technique (14.5% ± 2.5%) and the buried suture method (13.6% ± 1.4%). For the continuous suture methods, the 2-loop en bloc method showed the least tension (0.33 ± 0.05 N), and this was followed by Maruo's method (0.41 ± 0.07 N) and the subconjunctival buried suture method (0.45 ± 0.07 N). The tension of the suture at each loop was significantly greater (P = 0.000, t-test) in the interrupted suture methods (0.52 ± 0.07 N) than that in the continuous suture methods (0.41 ± 0.08 N). For the interrupted suture methods, Khoo's methods showed the greatest rate of tension (0.54 ± 0.06 N) compared with the buried suture technique (0.51 ± 0.08 N) and Mikamo's technique (0.48 ± 0.07 N). For the continuous suture methods, the 2-loop en bloc method showed the least tension (0.33 ± 0.05 N), followed by Maruo's method (0.41 ± 0.07 N) and the subconjunctival buried suture method (0.45 ± 0.07 N). We contend that a continuous suture method causes minimum notching, whereas an interrupted suture method causes less incidence of double-fold fading.

Development of a new center-cut method: SAV-cut (Stage Advance V-cut)

Purpose : DIR image is relatively free from susceptibility artifacts therefore, DIR image can make it possible to reliably measure cortical thickness/volume. One drawback of the DIR acquisition is the long scan time to acquire the fully sampled 3D data set. To solve this problem, we applied a parallel imaging method (GRAPPA) and verify the reliability of using the volumetric study. Materials and methods : Six healthy volunteers (3 males and 3 females; age years) underwent MRI using the 3D DIR sequence at a 3.0T Siemens Tim Trio MRI scanner. GRAPPA simulation was performed from the fully sampled data set for reduction factor 2. Data reconstruction was performed using MATLAB R2009b. Freesurfer v.4.3.0 was used to evaluate the cortical thickness of the entire brain, and to extract white matter information from the DIR image, Analyze 9.0 was used. The global cortical thickness estimated from the reconstructed image was compared with reference image by using a T-test in SPSS. Results : Although reduced SNR and blurring are observed from the reconstructed image, in terms of segmentation the effect was not so significant. The volumetric result was validated that there were no significant differences in many cortical regions. Conclusion : This study was performed with DIR image for a volumetric MRI study. To solve the long scan time of 3D DIR imaging, we applied GRAPPA algorithm. According to the results, fast imaging can be done with reduction factor 2 with little loss of image quality at 3.0T.

Cortical Thickness Estimation Using DIR Imaging with GRAPPA Factor 2

Objectives We developed an edible taste film test that can be stored easily as a kit. This study was conducted to confirm the agreement between the results of the edible taste film kit test and the conventional taste solution test. Design Prospective, randomised, controlled trial. Setting Single tertiary hospital. Participants Sixty-two healthy volunteers with no self-described taste problems. Interventions A randomisation scheme was used to determine the order of use of the edible taste film kit and the taste solution test for each subject. The taste solution test was performed using a cotton swab. In the taste film kit test, an edible taste film was placed on the tongue, and the subject detected the taste after the film was dissolved by saliva. Outcome measures For each test, we measured the taste identification threshold, taste detection time and total test time. Results We confirmed the consistency of the taste identification thresholds of the two tests, and the results were consistent with each other except for the bitter taste results, which used coffee in the edible taste film kit and quinine in the taste solution test. Although the detection time for each taste quality was faster for the taste solution test, the mean total time was significantly shorter for the taste film kit test than for the taste solution test (6.16±2.27 min vs 7.04±1.98 min, respectively; p=0.004). Conclusions The edible taste film kit along with the taste solution test will be useful for quantitative taste testing. Trial registration number KCT0002865.

Taste test using an edible taste film kit: a randomised controlled trial

PURPOSE To develop an effective method that can suppress noise in successive multiecho T2 (*)-weighted magnetic resonance (MR) brain images while preventing filtering artifacts. MATERIALS AND METHODS For the simulation experiments, we used multiple T2 -weighted images of an anatomical brain phantom. For in vivo experiments, successive multiecho MR brain images were acquired from five healthy subjects using a multiecho gradient-recalled-echo (MGRE) sequence with a 3T MRI system. Our denoising method is a nonlinear filter whose filtering weights are determined by tissue characteristics among pixels. The similarity of the tissue characteristics is measured based on the l2 -difference between two temporal decay signals. Both numerical and subjective evaluations were performed in order to compare the effectiveness of our denoising method with those of conventional filters, including Gaussian low-pass filter (LPF), anisotropic diffusion filter (ADF), and bilateral filter. Root-mean-square error (RMSE), signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) were used in the numerical evaluation. Five observers, including one radiologist, assessed the image quality and rated subjective scores in the subjective evaluation. RESULTS Our denoising method significantly improves RMSE, SNR, and CNR of numerical phantom images, and CNR of in vivo brain images in comparison with conventional filters (P < 0.005). It also receives the highest scores for structure conspicuity (8.2 to 9.4 out of 10) and naturalness (9.2 to 9.8 out of 10) among the conventional filters in the subjective evaluation. CONCLUSION This study demonstrates that high-SNR multiple T2 (*)-contrast MR images can be obtained using our denoising method based on tissue characteristics without noticeable artifacts.
