A new strong pearlitic multi-principal element alloy to withstand wear at elevated temperatures

High-entropy alloys (HEAs) have attracted increasing attention as structural materials due to their excellent mechanical properties; however, most single-phase HEAs still encounter the conflict between strength and plasticity, which greatly limits their engineering applications. Here we reported the use of composition design, that is the addition of Ni element into a base alloy of AlCoCrFeTi0.5 HEA, to obtain the body-centered cubic (BCC)/face-centered cubic (FCC) dual-phase structure, for avoiding the strength-plasticity trade-off. With the Ni addition increasing from 0 to 3 mol ratio, the initial ordered BCC (B2 phase) structure first transformed to a duplex BCC (A2 + B2) structure, and then to an FCC (L12)/BCC (A2 + B2) dual-phase structure. Meanwhile, the Ni-containing HEAs displayed greatly improved mechanical properties. More specifically, dual-phase AlCoCrFeTi0.5Ni2.5 HEA showed the most promising combination of strength and plasticity with a yield strength of 1.41 GPa and compressive strain of 31.8%, as well as a fracture toughness of 64.3 MPa m1/2. Post-deformation structural analyses of the AlCoCrFeTi0.5Ni2.5 HEA revealed that the activation of dislocations slip and stacking fault in the FCC (L12) phase, precipitation strengthening in BCC phase (B2), together with the synergic deformation between FCC and BCC phases, contribute to the desirable capability of strain hardening. Our work shows that the use of dual-phase architecture can be an effective microstructure-design strategy for developing HEAs with a favorable strength-ductility synergy.

Achieving dual-phase structure and improved mechanical properties in AlCoCrFeTi0.5 high-entropy alloys by addition of Ni

Eutectic high entropy alloys (EHEAs), as an important branch of high entropy alloy field, have attracted wide attention due to their excellent mechanical properties and superior castability. However, it is still an challenge to design the EHEAs. In this paper, we proposed a new method to design EHEAs by determining the formation of single-phase solid solution and calculating solidification paths (using JMatPro software). The eutectic composition can be predicted in the solidification path analysis where two phases (eutectic) solidified simultaneously when no inflexion point appears on the cooling curves of constituent phases. Correspondingly, three EHEAs are successfully designed, like NiAl–Mo8.7Cr8.7V8.7, NiAl–Mo14.5Cr14.5Fe14.5 and NiAl–Mo10Cr10V10Fe10 EHEAs. The microstructures of three EHEAs are investigated by SEM (EDS), TEM and XRD, and are composed of eutectic dendrites with lamellar structure. This type of EHEAs consist of B2 (NiAl) and BCC (like MoCrV, MoCrFe and MoCrVFe) phases with semi-coherent relation, and the nano-sized precipitates form in the two constituent phases, thus possessing the better mechanical properties compared to the great majority of EHEAs. Moreover, we also discuss the deformation mechanism that B2 phase firstly yields and deforms plastically compared to BCC phase. 

A new method to design eutectic high-entropy alloys by determining the formation of single-phase solid solution and calculating solidification paths

Multi-phase multi-scale composite eutectic alloys containing micrometer-scale dendrites and nano structures provide an opportunity for the development of ultrahigh strength materials. Eutectic high entropy alloys (EHEAs) facilitate the design of eutectic alloys with such structures in the as-cast state due to the hysteretic diffusion effect characteristic of high entropy alloys. Nevertheless, the prevailing design approach for eutectic high-entropy alloys predominantly emphasizes biphase eutectics, with limited attention directed towards methods for designing multiphase eutectic structures. In this work, we propose a pseudo-ternary based idea to design and prepare multiphase multiscale FCC-based triple-phase eutectic high-entropy alloys, i.e., CoCrFeNi–NiAl-X. Using this strategy, a series of triple-phase EHEAs consisting of face-centered cubic (FCC), ordered body-centered cubic (B2), and Laves phase with topologically-close-packed structure (TCP) were successfully prepared by arc melting, like CoCrFeNi–NiAl–Nb. The four designed FCC-based multi-phase multi-scale EHEAs can be categorized into two main groups: 1) primary phase FCC and biphase or triple-phase eutectic; and 2) primary phase FCC, biphase eutectic and triple-phase eutectic. The designed FCC-based multi-phase multi-scale EHEAs exhibit promising mechanical properties. The design idea is not only applicable to the current work, but also provides a new strategy for the later design of other multi-phase multi-scale composite EHEAs, like CoCrFeNi–NiAl–Ta.

A new infinite solid solution strategy to design eutectic high entropy alloys with B2 and BCC structure

The invention discloses high-strength, high-toughness and anti-corrosion cobalt-free high-entropy alloy and a preparation method thereof. In the high-strength, high-toughness and anti-corrosion cobalt-free high-entropy alloy, the atomic percent of Fe: Ni: Cr: Mn: Al is 30-27.5% : 30-27.5% : 15% : 10% : 15-20%. A preparation technology of the high-strength, high-toughness and anti-corrosion cobalt-free high-entropy alloy comprises the following steps: selecting the five elements including Fe, Ni, Cr, Mn and Al with the purity of each being 99.9wt% as the raw material for batching, and utilizinga non self-consuming electric arc furnace to prepare the high-entropy alloy through smelting. The high-entropy alloy is uniform in texture, shows excellent comprehensive mechanical property, does notcontain the expensive Co element and is low in price. The yield strength of the high-entropy alloy is equal to or greater than 770MPa, the breaking strain is equal to or greater than 45%, the corrosion resistance of the high-entropy alloy to 3.5wt.% NaCl is better than the corrosion resistance of stainless steel SUS 304 to 3.5wt.% NaCl, and the application prospect is broad.
