A method and system for placing an order to purchase an item via the Internet. The order is placed by a purchaser at a client system and received by a server system. The server system receives purchaser information including identification of the purchaser, payment information, and shipment information from the client system. The server system then assigns a client identifier to the client system and associates the assigned client identifier with the received purchaser information. The server system sends to the client system the assigned client identifier and an HTML document identifying the item and including an order button. The client system receives and stores the assigned client identifier and receives and displays the HTML document. In response to the selection of the order button, the client system sends to the server system a request to purchase the identified item. The server system receives the request and combines the purchaser information associated with the client identifier of the client system to generate an order to purchase the item in accordance with the billing and shipment information whereby the purchaser effects the ordering of the product by selection of the order button.

A simplified touch pad (21) which detects a "touch" in a specific absolute positioning programmable zone or "enter/select" zone (29) rather than requiring a "tap". The touch pad (21) also has an audible feedback device built into the touch pad (21) for immediate feedback and a touch sensitive surface (26) comprising a relative cursor positioning zone (27). By simplifying a touch pad (21)to include only basic functions, the touch pad (21) is easier to operate, simpler to manufacture, and more amenable to use with graphical interface display systems typically using touch screens. The invention is preferably incorporated into a kiosk (23) where simplified use is of great benefit. An embodiment of the invention includes an enclosure which completely seals the touch pad (21) from external contamination making the touch pad (21) waterproof and dust proof. A cover plate (51) also provides durability and added protection for the touch-sensitive surface (26) of the touch pad (21).

The first network and second network can be the same network. Complete control of a vending machine's functionality, including usage, control, diagnostics, inventory, and marketing data capture can be effectuated locally or by remote connection to the network. Remote connection to the network includes Internet type connections, telecommunication (telephone, ISDN, ADSL), VSAT satellite, and other wire and wireless transmission. The present invention allows a user to obtain authorization for use, pay for products and services, and configure the vending equipment with a smart card, or magnetic card (card). Magnetic cards include smart card, credit card, debit card, pre-paid, automated teller machine (ATM) or other bank or private issued card. Users can also use a hotel room key/card or other insertion type-identifying device. Additionally, biometric identification such as hand writing, voice, finger, hand, or eye (iris scan) can be utilized to control the system.

Storing image data and related information for sharing via a URL includes receiving image data uploaded from a client computer via a user interface and receiving, separate from the receiving of the image data, related information uploaded via the user interface. The uploaded image data and related information are stored. A uniform resource locator (URL) configured for retrieving a display that includes the stored image data and the related information is generated. The URL is provided in a message.

The present invention is an apparatus and method for selecting and sending mail pieces via an interactive kiosk. The interactive kiosk contains a microprocessor system programmed to interact with the customer for selecting a mail piece of choice. The microprocessor then displays queries and options for the purchaser to add a personalized message to the post card. The customer may also input the address or utilize an address locator feature for retrieving the address from a data base located in the kiosk. The kiosk then prompts the customer for payment via an electronic bill or credit card accepter. After the customer has completed using the kiosk, the kiosk communicates with a central processing location. The central processing location includes a microprocessor based system which electronically downloads the necessary information from the kiosk including the post card orders and customer/sales information. If the customer enters a physical street or post office box address, the customer text and address is printed onto the specific post card selected. Postage is affixed to the post card and the post card is then sent to the recipient. If an electronic mail address is used, a graphics file is created with the selected mail piece and customer text. The graphics file is then transmitted to the electronic mail address.
