Social learning analytics for determining learning styles in a smart classroom

Autonomous recommender system architecture for virtual learning environments

In this paper we propose a Fuzzy Cognitive Maps (FCMs) to recommender Learning Resources in a Smart Classroom. We have proposed a Smart Environment for a Classroom in previous works, based on Multi-agent Systems, called SaCI. One of its agents is a recommender system of Learning Resources. In this paper, we define this recommender system using Fuzzy Cognitive Maps. Our recommender system exploits the knowledge, learns, discovers new information, infers preferences, among other thing. For that, it uses five types of knowledge from SaCI: students, learning resources, topics, context and criticism. The performance results of our recommender system based on FCMs are very encouraging.

A Fuzzy Cognitive Map like recommender system of Learning Resources

Introduccion: como parte del proceso de formacion de enfermeros, medicos y tecnologos de la salud son habilitados temas relacionados con la microbiologia. Sin embargo, a partir del conjunto de medidas de seguridad y la disponibilidad de recursos fisicos, no es posible el estudio de diversos microorganismos. Objetivo: desarrollar un Sistema de Laboratorios Remoto para la practica de Microbiologia y Parasitologia Medica. Materiales y metodos: el sistema de Laboratorios Remoto posee un microscopio electronico controlado mediante una interface de comunicacion con un ordenador conectado a la red. Resultados: se obtuvo como resultado un Sistema de Laboratorios Remoto que puede ser accedido mediante Internet o la red institucional. Facilita el estudio y la interpretacion de diferentes muestras biologicas. Brinda un conjunto de reportes y estadisticas que permiten realizar analisis historicos de comportamiento. Conclusiones: a partir del desarrollo de las practicas de laboratorios a distancia, es posible el estudio de diferentes microorganismos sin riesgos biologicos para el estudiante. Palabras clave: sistema de laboratorios remoto;  microbiologia;  practicas de laboratorio. ABSTRACT Introduction: as part of the training process for nurses, physicians and health technologists, topics related to microbiology are enabled. However, based on the set of security measures and the availability of physical resources, the study of various microorganisms is not possible. Objective: to develop a Remote Laboratory System for the practice of the subject Medical Microbiology and Parasitology. Methods : the Remote Laboratory System has an electronic microscope controlled by a communication interface with a computer connected to the network. Results : a Remote Laboratory System that can be accessed through the Internet or the institutional network. The system facilitates the study and interpretation of different biological samples and also provides a set of reports and statistics that allow for historical behavior analysis. Conclusions: from the development of remote laboratory practices, it is possible to study different microorganisms without biological risks for the student . Keywords: remote laboratory system, microbiology, laboratory practices.

The data analysis has become a fundamental area for knowledge discovery from data extracted from different sources. In that sense, to develop mechanisms, strategies, methodologies that facilitate their use in different contexts, it has become an important need. In this paper, we propose an “Autonomic Cycle Of Data Analysis Tasks” for learning analytic (ACODAT) in the context of online learning environments, which defines a set of tasks of data analysis, whose objective is to improve the learning processes. Each data analysis task interacts with each other, and has different roles: observe the process, analyze and interpret what happens in it, or make decisions in order to improve the learning process. In this paper, we study the application of the autonomic cycle into the contexts of a smart classroom and a virtual learning platform.

Autonomous Cycle of Data Analysis Tasks for Learning Processes

The Department of Computer Science at the University of Los Andes has proposed a new curriculum model based on the profile defined by ACM/IEEE, and a pedagogical model based on the "learning by doing" paradigm, in order to ensure a process of self-formation of the student. The knowledge management and the learning process are based on the concept of clouds. The new educational model is based on three clouds: a) the self-formation cloud which is composed of everything related to the student's education (curriculum, etc.); b) the learning paradigm cloud which is related to the paradigms, strategies, forms of assessment, and learning tools; and c) the knowledge sources cloud which is composed of all existing knowledge in the world, in all its forms, from all possible sources. To give support to the educational model, a web platform based on Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) is proposed in this work. The system consists of three management layers; each one manages each one of the clouds described above. The implementation of each layer is made as web services. Each layer has its own data structure defined like ontology. This is called Extended Database, which also has the ability to support processes of reasoning over it.

Computational platform for the educational model based on the cloud paradigm

In this paper is presented an adaptive module of the learning style of the students of the Computational Platform for the Educational Model based on the Cloud Paradigm, proposed in previous work. This adaptive module redefines the learning style that has the student, in order to improve his academic performance in the platform. The learning style of the students is very important in this platform, because it defines the profile of the educational resources to be proposed to the students. The learning style defines the activities, tools and evaluations that must have the educational resources, to carry out the learning process more successful. The adaptive module carries out the automatic reconfiguration of the learning style assigned to a student, once evaluated its performance in the different courses that the student has taken so far. To assign a new style of learning, the module takes into account the academic performance of the student. If this is low, it calculates and assigns a new style. The initial learning style of the students is defined using the Felder-Silverman test. Then, this module is invoked interactively each time is finished a scholar period.

Reconfiguration of the learning style in the computer learning platform based on cloud paradigm

Se presenta un modelo educativo para utilizarlo en carreras universitarias del area de ciencias de la computacion, basado en los conceptos de aprendizaje activo, objetos de aprendizajes y aprender haciendo. Se orienta a la formacion de profesionales que respondan a las necesidades del pais en TICs y los perfiles definidos en IEEE/ACM. Se busca conjugar actividades cientificas, de reflexion y de desarrollo de tecnologias, haciendo que sobre los grupos de investigacion gravite todo el que-hacer de la carrera; bajo la gestion del conocimiento y desarrollo de productos tecnologicos basado en “aprender-haciendo”. Por otro lado, actualmente el aprendizaje se ha difundido por medios electronicos, se propone incorporar estrategias de educacion a distancia, asistida por computador, entre otras. Ademas, se toma en cuenta las necesidades del estudiante, proponiendo grafos curriculares flexibles, adaptables a necesidades emergentes, basados en un proceso de auto-formacion. Tambien, se propone una estructura organizacional inspirada en las "nubes"; especificamente, el efecto, la densidad y la dinamica interna de las nubes, moviendose de forma flexible con el viento (el acontecer mundial, la industria, los retos que viene enfrentando la educacion superior). El modelo esta dividido en tres sub modelos: Modelo Curricular, Modelo Didactico y Modelo de Evaluacion.

The World Wide Web (WWW) has obtained a great success allowing accessibility of an incredible range of information and services to billions of users at world level. However, nowadays it is becoming more difficult to manage the constant increase of the available information and the need of using such information to do more complex tasks than searches based on key words and data retrieval. The problem is more complex due to the lack of structure and decentralized nature of the Web. Looking for a better utilization of the Web resourcesit has been proposed that the information in the Web should be provided with a better defined meaning, forming a net of logic information. This idea has been defined as the Semantic Web. Ontologies are theories of the content about types of objects, properties and relationships that exist in a specific domain of the knowledge. Ontologies provide vocabularies of special terms with formal defined meanings accessible to machines throughout specificly designed softwares, to describe the knowledge of a particular domain that can be used in the semantic web. The main objective of this work is to formally define an ontology called OLIMS (Ontology for Laboratory Information Management Systems), in the OWL (Ontology Web Language) language for modeling the domain of the Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS). We used the methodology called Methontology. OLIMS was automatically generated from the UML (Unified Modeling Language) class diagram, it is embedded in the SIGELAB system and it is of easy extensibility and maintainable. OLIMS uses web resources that are approved standards of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).
