Laser transmission welding of high-performance polymers and reinforced composites - a fundamental study
TL;DR: In this paper, the weldability of high-performance polymers and carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastics (CFRP) using laser transmission welding techniques was investigated using the absorption characteristics of CFRP as joining partner and the heat distribution within the surface due to laser impact.

Laser based welding of cellular aluminium
TL;DR: In this article, the results from laser welding of aluminium foam are reported, and they show that the process is a productive joining method for this innovative material, because of the spatially limited energy input of the laser, a collapse of foam structure can be effectively avoided.

Electromagnetic induction heating of an orthopaedic nickel--titanium shape memory device.
Christian W. Müller,Ronny Pfeifer,Tarek El-Kashef,Christof Hurschler,Dirk Herzog,Markus Oszwald,Carl Haasper,Christian Krettek,Thomas Gösling +8 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that electromagnetic induction heating of orthopedic NiTi implants is feasible and safe in a rat model and this is the first step in the development of new Orthopedic implants in which stiffness or rigidity can be modified after implantation to optimize bone‐healing.

Laser-based joining of technical textiles for airbag production
Michael Hustedt,Johannes Stein,Dirk Herzog,Oliver Meier,Laser Zentrum Hannover +4 more
- 01 Jan 2008
TL;DR: In this paper, the basic principles of laser-based airbag welding are presented and discussed for a driver airbag as an example, and the influence of different process parameters on the seam strength as well as aspects of seam construction and quality control are shown.

Process monitoring system for laser transmission welding of plastics using direct visualization of the weld seam
Dirk Herzog,M. Fargas,Oliver Meier,Alexander von Busse +3 more
- 06 Apr 2007
TL;DR: In this paper, a new monitoring principle for laser transmission welding of plastics is presented, which uses two independent detectors: a CCD or CMOS camera to supply an image of the weld seam and a pyrometer to detect heat damage from the welding process.
