A remote program guide access device is connected to the interactive television program guide equipment by a remote access link to provide a user with remote access to program guide functions. The system provides a user with an opportunity to adjust program guide settings with a given one of the interactive television program guides. Program guide setting include features related to setting program reminders, profiles, program recording features, messaging features, favorites features, parental control features, program guide set up features (e.g., audio and video and language settings), etc.

Multiple IPGs for different users of a PVR may be implemented. Other PVR related features are also provided.

The system includes a data processor for receiving program schedule information for a plurality of programs and data feeds containing status information for certain of the programs, and a video display generator for generating a display signal simultaneously comprising information from both the stored schedule information and the received data feed. The system is further provided with user control means such as a remote controller for generating user control commands and transmitting signals to the data processor in response thereto so as to control the content of the display signal. The display signal may be displayed on a display apparatus such as a television receiver. In addition, the program schedule system of the present invention utilizes category-specific user interfaces providing access to multiple services including television programs, received data feeds, home shopping services, and video games as well as the stored program schedule information.

An Interactive Television (ITV) Client/Server system comprises one or more Clients (e.g., set top boxes or "STBs") connected to a Server module, via a Broadband Communication Network, is described. The system provides a generic mechanism for deciding how much or how little data is to be sent in response to a request from a Client. Specifically, each Client is allowed to describe ahead of time how much memory (approximately or exactly) it is allowing for the query result. This is communicated by the Client as part of the query itself. Regardless of what other activity the Client undertakes, the server maintains the context of the original query, until the Client terminates the connection. In a similar manner, when other simultaneous queries are open, the context is maintained for each query until the connection is dropped (or the query terminates). The Client can ask for more data (i.e., rows) on any open query. To optimize operation of the environment, requests from the Clients (i.e., queries) are de-multiplexed down to a set of worker threads, available at the server, which carry out the actual work of query processing. Because of this approach, a request for more data from a Client (i.e., set top box) can "land" on any worker thread. This gives queries the ability to "jump" from one thread of execution to another. In this manner, a finite number of threads may be employed to service a large query pool, with maximum throughput.

A client/server system is described incorporating methods for managing object availability through semantic object "load sets." By associating a particular "load set" with each object which might be requested by a client, improved object fetching and cache management is provided. Methods are described for managing object fetching and discarding on a per object basis, not on a per page basis. Each "semantic object" is packaged in a "storable," which incorporates dependency lists indicating the context in which the object is to be used (i.e., with which dependent objects). Additionally, a program developer can specify that the set of behaviors is defined at runtime, using "prefetch" primitives provided by the system. This allows an executing application to prefetch objects based on the then-existing dynamics of the system. With this approach, object availability in a distributed object environment (e.g., Internet) is improved.
