An embodiment of a machine for brewing a beverage such as coffee includes a chamber and a piston assembly disposed in the chamber. The chamber is operable to receive a liquid such as water and a flavor base such as ground coffee, and to allow the beverage to brew from a mixture of the liquid and the base. The piston assembly is operable to filter a solid such as spent coffee grounds from the brewed beverage by moving in a first direction, and to force the filtered beverage out of the chamber by moving in a second direction. By modifying or automating some or all steps of the French press brewing technique, such a machine may control one or more of the brewing parameters with a level of precision that yields brewed coffee having a uniform taste from cup to cup. Furthermore, such a machine may brew the coffee with a speed that renders the machine suitable for use by establishments that serve significant amounts of coffee.

Because the carbon dioxide gas flow control means (5) is provided between the carbon dioxide gas dissolver (7) and a carbon dioxide gas supply source, carbonated spring of a high concentration can be always manufactured even if the pressure of supplied carbon dioxide gas changes or the permeating performance of a membrane changes.

Next, the modification may be compared against a modification threshold to determine whether the modification warrants corrective action. A corrective action may include but is not limited to, resetting the equipment to original or default settings, notifying an end user, notifying the equipment providers, logging the action, or some combination of two or more of these actions.

In this, the thickness of the membrane [( 14 )] can be pre-selected as a function of the flow rate of the liquid [( 39 )] flowing along the retentate side [( 140 )].

There is a measuring container (11) through which the liq. can flow, which contains a membrane (14) as above. There is a temp. sensor (20), a volumetric flowrate meter (19, 34) on the permeate side (16) of the membrane and a calculation unit (23, 38) to obtain the concn. of the has in the liq. from the measurements.

The thickness of the membrane is pre-chosen in proportion to the speed of liquid flow.
