Water-insoluble oils, including crude petroleum and a wide variety of refined organic liquids, can cause major problems if spilled or leaked to aqueous environments. Potential environmental damage may be reduced if the spilled oil is promptly and efficiently removed from the water. This article reviews research that sheds light on the use of cellulose-based materials as sorbents to mitigate effects of oil spills. Encouraging results for oil sorption have been reported when using naturally hydrophobic cellulosic fibers such as unprocessed cotton, kapok, or milkweed seed hair. In addition, a wide assortment of cellulosic materials have been shown to be effective sorbents for hydrocarbon oils, especially in the absence of water, and their performance under water-wet conditions can be enhanced by various pretreatments that render them more hydrophobic. More research is needed on environmentally friendly systems to handle oil-contaminated sorbents after their use; promising approaches include their re-use after regeneration, anaerobic digestion, and incineration, among others. Research is also needed to further develop combined response systems in which biosorption is used along with other spill-response measures, including skimming, demulsification, biodegradation, and the use of booms to limit the spreading of oil slicks.

This paper describes a novel technique for multiple parameter extraction of the S12X TEM cell model using a fuzzy logic system FLS. The FLS is utilized to capture the circuit information and to extract the circuit parameters based on experiential knowledge. The proposed extraction technique uses both linguistic information i.e., human-like knowledge and experience and numerical data of measurement to construct the fuzzy macromodel. The simulation results confirm the validity and estimation performance of the equivalent circuit by the advocated design methodology.

Higher Order Neural Network Architectures for Agent-Based Computational Economics and Finance

The sinking of the tanker Prestige produced a large oil spill that affected the shores of Spain, Portugal and France. Cleaning operations were performed on the sea and the coasts and the waste recovered was a melange of fuel, water and a variety of debris. Waste mass balances show that, while the total amount of recovered fuel is close to the amount spilled by the vessel, the total amount of waste is about four times that quantity. In the present study we have focused in the stabilization of the raw oily wastes of the Prestige's oil spill using quicklime and granite sawdust, which is an inert waste of the local dimension stone industry. Given appropriate proportions of quicklime and sawdust, stabilization is feasible and provides a better performance than the only use of quicklime. Leaching tests indicate that the stabilized mixtures can be considered a non-dangerous waste although high quicklime contents may enhance the leachability of given components (Ba, Cr, SO 4 ) and BTEX. This chapter displays an example of application of the ANN in civil engineering. Concretely, it is applied to the prediction of the consistency of the fresh concrete through the results that slump test provides, a simple approach to the rheological behaviour of the mixtures. From the previously done tests, an artificial neural network trained by means of genetic algorithms adjusts to the situation, and has the variable value of the cone as an output, and as an input, diverse variables related to the composition of each type of concrete.
