This article explores the possible ramifications of incorporating ideas from AEC Industry 6.0 into the design and construction of intelligent, environmentally friendly, and long-lasting structures. This statement highlights the need to shift away from the current methods seen in the AEC Industry 5.0 to effectively respond to the increasing requirement for creative and environmentally sustainable infrastructures. Modern building techniques have been made more efficient and long-lasting because of AEC Industry 6.0’s cutting-edge equipment, cutting-edge digitalization, and ecologically concerned methods. The academic community has thoroughly dissected the many benefits of AEC Industry 5.0. Examples are increased stakeholder involvement, automation, robotics for optimization, decision structures based on data, and careful resource management. However, the difficulties of implementing AEC Industry 6.0 principles are laid bare in this research. It calls for skilled experts who are current on the latest technologies, coordinate the technical expertise of many stakeholders, orchestrate interoperable standards, and strengthen cybersecurity procedures. This study evaluates how well the principles of Industry 6.0 can create smart, long-lasting, and ecologically sound structures. The goal is to specify how these ideas may revolutionize the building industry. In addition, this research provides an in-depth analysis of how the AEC industry might best adopt AEC Industry 6.0, underscoring the sector-wide significance of this paradigm change. This study thoroughly analyzes AEC Industry 6.0 about big data analytics, the IoT, and collaborative robotics. To better understand the potential and potential pitfalls of incorporating AEC Industry 6.0 principles into the construction of buildings, this study examines the interaction between organizational dynamics, human actors, and robotic systems.

Reviewing and Integrating AEC Practices into Industry 6.0: Strategies for Smart and Sustainable Future-Built Environments

Detection and monitoring of airborne hazards using e-noses has been lifesaving and prevented accidents in real-world scenarios. E-noses generate unique signature patterns for various volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and, by leveraging artificial intelligence, detect the presence of various VOCs, gases, and smokes onsite. Widespread monitoring of airborne hazards across many remote locations is possible by creating a network of gas sensors using Internet connectivity, which consumes significant power. Long-range (LoRa)-based wireless networks do not require Internet connectivity while operating independently. Therefore, we propose a networked intelligent gas sensor system (N-IGSS) which uses a LoRa low-power wide-area networking protocol for real-time airborne pollution hazard detection and monitoring. We developed a gas sensor node by using an array of seven cross-selective tin-oxide-based metal-oxide semiconductor (MOX) gas sensor elements interfaced with a low-power microcontroller and a LoRa module. Experimentally, we exposed the sensor node to six classes i.e., five VOCs plus ambient air and as released by burning samples of tobacco, paints, carpets, alcohol, and incense sticks. Using the proposed two-stage analysis space transformation approach, the captured dataset was first preprocessed using the standardized linear discriminant analysis (SLDA) method. Four different classifiers, namely AdaBoost, XGBoost, Random Forest (RF), and Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP), were then trained and tested in the SLDA transformation space. The proposed N-IGSS achieved “all correct” identification of 30 unknown test samples with a low mean squared error (MSE) of 1.42 × 10−4 over a distance of 590 m.

An IoT-Enabled E-Nose for Remote Detection and Monitoring of Airborne Pollution Hazards Using LoRa Network Protocol

With the rapid increase of data, centralized machine learning can no longer meet the application requirements of the Internet of Vehicles (IoV). On the one hand, both car owners and regulators pay more attention to data privacy and are unwilling to share data, which forms the isolated data island challenge. On the other hand, the incremental data generated in IoV are massive and diverse. All these issues have brought challenges of data increment and data diversity. The current common federated learning or incremental learning frameworks cannot effectively integrate incremental data with existing machine learning (ML) models. Therefore, this paper proposes a Federated Learning Framework Based on Incremental Weighting and Diversity Selection for IoV (Fed-IW&DS). In Fed-IW&DS, a vehicle diversity selection algorithm was proposed, which uses a variety of performance indicators to calculate diversity scores, effectively reducing homogeneous computing. Also, it proposes a vehicle federated incremental algorithm that uses an improved arctangent curve as the decay function, to realize the rapid fusion of incremental data with existing ML models. Moreover, we have carried out several sets of experiments to test the validity of the proposed Fed-IW&DS framework’s performance. The experimental results show that, under the same global communication round and similar computing time, the Fed-IW&DS framework has significantly improved performance in all aspects compared to the frameworks FED-AVG, FED-SGD, FED-prox & the decay functions linear, square curve and arc tangent. Specifically, the Fed-IW&DS framework improves the Acc (accuracy), loss (loss), and Matthews correlation coefficient (MCC) by approximately 32%, 83%, and 66%, respectively. This result shows that Fed-IW&DS is a more reliable solution than the common frameworks of federated learning, and it can effectively deal with the dynamic incremental data in the IoV scenario. Our findings should make a significant contribution to the field of federated learning.

The preceding methodology, AEC Industry 6.0, has substantially improved the efficacy and sustainability of construction by using new technology, digitalization, and environmentally conscious methods. Extensive discussions have occurred on the various benefits of AEC Industry 5.0. These merits include heightened stakeholder involvement, increased efficiency via automation and robots, decision-making processes centered around data, and the optimization of resources. Nevertheless, this study also examines the obstacles linked to the complete adoption of AEC Industry 6.0. These challenges require proficient professionals who can effectively utilize contemporary technologies, manage diverse stakeholder technological competencies, establish interoperable systems and standards, and reinforce cybersecurity measures. This study examines the viability of implementing concepts from Industry 6.0 to create intelligent, sustainable, and environmentally friendly structures. The objective is to showcase the potentially revolutionary impact that these principles may have on the construction industry. This study explores the possible applications of AEC Industry 6.0 within the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) sector, explicitly highlighting the anticipated industry-wide consequences of the forthcoming paradigm shift. This paper comprehensively examines big data analytics, the Internet of Things (IoT), and collaborative robots as they pertain to the AEC Industry 6.0. This research investigates the interplay between organizational dynamics, human actors, and robotic systems to provide light on the opportunities and obstacles associated with integrating AEC Industry 6.0 concepts into the construction of buildings. 

Nowadays, billions of phones, IoT and edge devices around the world generate data continuously, enabling many Machine Learning (ML)-based products and applications. However, due to increasing privacy concerns and regulations, these data tend to reside on devices (clients) instead of being centralized for performing traditional ML model training. Federated Learning (FL) is a distributed approach in which a single server and multiple clients collaboratively build an ML model without moving data away from clients. Whereas existing studies on FL have their own experimental evaluations, most experiments were conducted using a simulation setting or a small-scale testbed. This might limit the understanding of FL implementation in realistic environments. In this empirical study, we systematically conduct extensive experiments on a large network of IoT and edge devices (called IoT-Edge devices) to present FL real-world characteristics, including learning performance and operation (computation and communication) costs. Moreover, we mainly concentrate on heterogeneous scenarios, which is the most challenging issue of FL. By investigating the feasibility of on-device implementation, our study provides valuable insights for researchers and practitioners, promoting the practicality of FL and assisting in improving the current design of real FL systems.

An Empirical Study of Federated Learning on IoT-Edge Devices: Resource Allocation and Heterogeneity

The topic of indoor air pollution has yet to receive the same level of attention as ambient pollution. We spend considerable time indoors, and poorer indoor air quality affects most of us, particularly people with respiratory and other health conditions. There is a pressing need for methodological case studies focusing on informing households about the causes and harms of indoor air pollution and supporting changes in behaviour around different indoor activities that cause it. The use of indoor air quality (IAQ) sensor data to support behaviour change is the focus of our research in this paper. We have conducted two studies—first, to evaluate the effectiveness of the IAQ data visualisation as a trigger for the natural reflection capability of human beings to raise awareness. This study was performed without the scaffolding of a formal behaviour change model. In the second study, we showcase how a behaviour psychology model, COM-B (Capability, Opportunity, and Motivation-Behaviour), can be operationalised as a means of digital intervention to support behaviour change. We have developed four digital interventions manifested through a digital platform. We have demonstrated that it is possible to change behaviour concerning indoor activities using the COM-B model. We have also observed a measurable change in indoor air quality. In addition, qualitative analysis has shown that the awareness level among occupants has improved due to our approach of utilising IoT sensor data with COM-B-based digital interventions.

From Raising Awareness to a Behavioural Change: A Case Study of Indoor Air Quality Improvement Using IoT and COM-B Model

Federated Learning (FL) enables multiple clients to train a shared model collaboratively without sharing any personal data. However, selecting a model and adapting it quickly to meet user expectations in a large-scale FL application with heterogeneous devices is challenging. In this paper, we propose a model selection and adaptation system for Federated Learning (FedMSA), which includes a hardware-aware model selection algorithm that trades-off model training efficiency and model performance base on FL developers’ expectation. Meanwhile, considering the expected model should be achieved by dynamic model adaptation, FedMSA supports full automation in building and deployment of the FL task to different hardware at scale. Experiments on benchmark and real-world datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the model selection algorithm of FedMSA in real devices (e.g., Raspberry Pi and Jetson nano).

FedMSA: A Model Selection and Adaptation System for Federated Learning

Thousands of energy-aware sensors have been placed for monitoring in a variety of scenarios, such as manufacturing, control systems, disaster management, flood control and so on, requiring time-critical energy-efficient solutions to extend their lifetime. This paper proposes reinforcement learning (RL) based dynamic data streams for time-critical IoT systems in energy-aware IoT devices. The designed solution employs the Q-Learning algorithm. The proposed mechanism has the potential to adjust the data transport rate based on the amount of renewable energy resources that are available, to ensure collecting reliable data while also taking into account the sensor battery lifetime. The solution was evaluated using historical data for solar radiation levels, which shows that the proposed solution can increase the amount of transmitted data up to 23%, ensuring the continuous operation of the device.
