A critical review on plasma-catalytic removal of VOCs: Catalyst development, process parameters and synergetic reaction mechanism.

High-performance of plasma-catalysis hybrid system for toluene removal in air using supported Au nanocatalysts

Due to surface effects and quantum size effects, nanomaterials have properties that are vastly different from those of bulk materials due to surface effects. The particle size distribution plays an important role in chemical and physical properties. The measurement and control of this parameter are crucial for nanomaterial synthesis. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) is a fast and non-invasive tool used to measure particle size, size distribution and stability in solutions or suspensions during nanomaterial preparation. In this review, we focus on the in situ sizing of nanomaterial preparation in the form of colloids, especially for metal oxide nanoparticles (MONs). The measuring principle, including an overview of sizing techniques, advantages and limitations and theories of DLS were first discussed. The instrument design was then investigated. Ex-situ and in situ configuration of DLS, sample preparations, measurement conditions and reaction cell design for in situ configuration were studied. The MONs preparation monitored by DLS was presented, taking into consideration both ex situ and in situ configuration.

Dynamic Light Scattering: A Powerful Tool for In Situ Nanoparticle Sizing

Gas discharge plasma (catalysis) process (GDPP/GDPCP) is efficient for degrading VOCs at ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure, but the process also leads to the emission of gaseous byproducts including organic aerosols, NOx and O3. In this paper, a novel double-chamber dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) catalysis reactor, which was consisted of a gas phase packed-bed discharge chamber and a gas-liquid phase discharge chamber in series, was designed to enhance the benzene degradation and inhibit the emission of gaseous byproducts. Mn-Cu/Al2O3 catalyst was employed as the packed material in gas phase discharge chamber due to their good catalytic performance in VOCs degradation. Persulfate was added in the water of gas-liquid phase discharge chamber to reduce the emission of gaseous byproducts. The results show that Mn-Cu/Al2O3 (1:1) catalysts improved benzene degradation and CO2 selectivity compared to discharge plasma treatment alone, and the emission of O3 and NO2 was effectively reduced; moreover, an addition of persulfate in water also enhanced the degradation of benzene due to the formation of stronger active radicals via an activation of persulfate by discharge plasma. The characterization of Cu-Mn catalyst by XRD, SEM and XPS shows that Cu1.4Mn1.6O4 is one of important components of Cu-Mn composite catalyst, and the derived redox couples of Mn4+ /Mn3+ and Cu2+/Cu+ with more vacancies are helpful for adsorbing oxygen or ozone and then enhancing the degradation of benzene.

Successive treatment of benzene and derived byproducts by a novel plasma catalysis-adsorption process

Non-thermal plasma is one of the most promising technologies used for the degradation of hazardous pollutants in wastewater. Recent studies evidenced that various operating parameters influence the yield of the Non-Thermal Plasma (NTP)-based processes. In particular, the presence of a catalyst, suitably placed in the NTP reactor, induces a significant increase in process performance with respect to NTP alone. For this purpose, several researchers have studied the ability of NTP coupled to catalysts for the removal of different kind of pollutants in aqueous solution. It is clear that it is still complicated to define an optimal condition that can be suitable for all types of contaminants as well as for the various types of catalysts used in this context. However, it was highlighted that the operational parameters play a fundamental role. However, it is often difficult to understand the effect that plasma can induce on the catalyst and on the production of the oxidizing species most responsible for the degradation of contaminants. For this reason, the aim of this review is to summarize catalytic formulations coupled with non-thermal plasma technology for water pollutants removal. In particular, the reactor configuration to be adopted when NTP was coupled with a catalyst was presented, as well as the position of the catalyst in the reactor and the role of the main oxidizing species. Furthermore, in this review, a comparison in terms of degradation and mineralization efficiency was made for the different cases studied.
