The Internet of Things (IoT) is a promising field that will connect billions of devices to communicate and share information in the future. The increased amount of information sharing causes a threat to data security and privacy. However, IoT devices are fundamentally resource-constrained, thus, traditional encryption algorithms are computationally expensive for this small size and low power devices. Therefore, a lightweight security algorithm is needed. In this paper, resource-friendly, energy-saving data encryption along with an efficient key generation mechanism is proposed namely Generalized Triangle Based Security Algorithm (G-TBSA). The proposed G-TBSA is applied in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) with low power Wi-Fi. The key generation process is the heart of the algorithm because of its usage of fewer resources to generate keys and thus, minimize the complexity of the algorithm and achieving its energy efficiency. It outperforms state-of-the-art methods in terms of power consumption while achieving all necessary security requirements.

G-TBSA: A Generalized Lightweight Security Algorithm for IoT

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are important and becoming more important as we integrate wireless sensor networks and the internet with different things, which has changed our life, and it is affected everywhere in our life like shopping, storage, live monitoring, smart home etc., called Internet of Things (IoT), as any use of the network physical devices that included in electronics, software, sensors, actuators, and connectivity which makes available these things to connect, collect and exchange data, and the most importantly thing is the accuracy of the data that has been collected in the Internet of Things, detecting sensor data with faulty readings is an important issue of secure communication and power consumption. So, requirement of energy-efficiency and integrity of information is mandatory.

Wireless Sensor Networks Security: Case study

Wireless networks and wireless sensor networks (WSNs) provide great benefits over the traditional approaches for several applications. These include smart homes, healthcare, environmental monitoring, and homeland security. WSNs can be integrated with the Internet Protocol (IP) to develop the Internet of Things (IoT) for connecting everyday life objects to the internet. Hence, major challenges of WSNs include: ● To efficiently utilize low-power nodes to implement security during data transmission among several sensor nodes. ● To resolve security issues during data transmission over a long coverage range. Encryption is a vital process to ensure the confidentiality of the information transmitted over the insecure wireless channel. In this paper, a study of various algorithms for secure wireless transmission was performed. To facilitate energy-efficient data encryption, a method based on efficient key generation mechanism was required. The proposed TBSA based system gives an outstanding performance by fulfilling all the necessary security requirements. The experimental results showed that the proposed TBSA algorithm consumed less energy in comparison with some other existing methods.
